Surprise surprise HS2

I liked the Dutch rail system.

White train stops every stop, city/town/village.
yellow double decker (intercity) stops at larger stations only in towns/cities
Express train stops in major cities only
Thalys trains for country to country major cities.

Tap in and out on the platform (except thalys), going on the express you tap the red swipe point for the express upgrade. Seemed to be set fees no matter when you travel.

Plenty of bike storage at stations and on trains.

We should have an intercity just running between Boro, Stockton, Hartlepool, Sunderland & Newcastle every 15 mins
Local service serving all the other stops every 15 mins.
Get some passing siding loops built to let express through. Straighten some of the track out on the Durham Coast Line and the North East would be a far better place to work for many.

Not sure what they use in France but basically I had pretty much perfect streaming of UK TV using a VPN for hundreds of miles through rural France on a train at 200mph, same when I drove to Paris a few months ago, I streamed UK radio the length of the motorway from Calais. It's hardly rocket science
It's interesting that you mention rocket science, as we regularly get streams from those, even 3rd party ones like SpaceX, and they've been landing them vertically for years too

WiFi works better on planes, which is absolutely ludicrous.

The French trains might push a signal down the same electric lines they use for power (sort of like a powerline adapter), but as their trains on major routes are all electrified they can do that. We probably don't bother with that as not may trains are electrified as we still think it's 1970.

You can't even get wifi or any signal in the tube (from my last visit), which is a massive tubular network with endless capacity for additional cabling.

They complain that it's hard to build things because of the population density, yet they don't take advantage of things which are made simpler and cheaper when cities are closer together.

All they do is wait, and the longer you wait, the more it costs, or an alternative comes out which costs even more.

One way or another we need far more capacity North to South, so even if HS2 is binned from the south upwards, it doesn't mean the problem will go away. It will just mean it get's re-approved in another 10 or 20 years, costing twice as much, or they pin their hopes on battery flights. Long distance battery buses won't work, as they're not going to be fast enough.

Interestingly the solutions may now be getting cheaper ... wont be long and you could stick a couple of starlink terminals on every train and you'd be golden.

Well well well, it now appears that even the Euston connection is not a done deal, it will only happen if funded by private investment and the industry feeling is that the government might struggle to find that.

You’re talking eight trains an hour in both directions plus expresses and freight on the DCL? That’s not the odd passing loop that’s quadrupling the track. And no way the sizes of the towns would justify the traffic.

This picture from Google Street View probably sums it up!
