Team on Saturday

Forss is much more of a goal threat arriving onto the ball from wide. When he plays up front on his own his performances fall off a cliff.
Totally agree. Forss is much better as an inside forward in a 4-2-3-1.

As for the team for Saturday. It has to be the same shape and formation given recent results.

We won our last three games, a welcome nine points, but it's still papering over the cracks...

We didn't play well last night, but we didn't have too, Bham played awful.

QPR we struggled until the 2nd half, but we found a way of winning, against another very poor team.

Norwich played us off the park for 29 mins, and were unlucky not to go 2 or 3 up, then the crazy sending off and Norwich folded.

The problem we have, is looking at last night, Greenwood ,Azaz both came on and both had no impact on the game, Jones would be a better option.
I agree that I don't necessarily think it's job done but at least we are finding ways to win ugly now and thats what I really wanted Carrick to try and do. He's adapted the system to accomodate the players he has available to him. It's a shame it's taken so long to adapt but he's done it now.and hopefully this will encourage him to be a bit more flexible on his tactics going forward.

Agree that we were fortunate against Norwich and had they not had a man wrongly sent off we would have probably lost that game. But we took advantage of the situation a got a much needed win.

QPR I thought was a well deserved away victory. We didn't give them much and took our chances. Wasn't particularly pretty but doesn't have to be always. They were a team in form.

Last night was a really poor match and I don't think we could have had too many complaints had they equalised. Both teams were really poor. But that said, we didn't give them much other than when Dieng made an error. Riley separated it with a moment of magic which is often the case in closely fought matches.

We've got some.tougher matches coming up, I think we should stick with this system and get whatever results we can. I still think we'll finish around 9th-12th in the table but it's good that a bit of pressure is now off the team and hopefully we can see some better football from here on in.

Rav could barely walk at the end yesterday. He did the job of 3 players last night so not surprising. Hope he recovers quickly.

I kept thinking Ayling needed taking off but Carrick made a good point about being in tune with the flow of the game. I suspect he was right. We defended really well.

Swings and roundabouts though. We've played 'better' in plenty of other games this season, created more chances and lost. Nice to be on the other side of it.

Yes, he was holding his groin when Carrick went over to have a chat with him. McGree took a heavy tackle and I noticed he walked off the field carrying his boots.

So if those two could be struggling then what?

Greenwood for McGree? Dijksteel as the third CB for Rav?

or back to 4231?

Dieng
Ayling McNair Clarke Engel
Howson O'Brien
Jones Azaz Forss
Lath

With Forss coming in on his right foot he could be an even bigger goal threat from that side.

Whatever formation, I'd consider putting O'Brien man to man on Szmodic, nullify him and they've got nothing left.

If Jones was fit I would rather see Ayling go to RCB and Jones play RWB and stick with 3 at the back.
Ayling played there a fair bit for Leeds.

I don’t worry about getting results when we’re not at our best.
It’s now water under the bridge and we got the points somehow. There have been a few games where we got unlucky or the referees were poor, so things even up eventually.
I bear in mind that Mr Carrick knows what is happening and he will do his best to put the best team out for each occasion. He is a good judge of football and he is learning all the time.

We've also been battered in games, Leicester 71% pos - 29% Boro 24 shots - 5 shots and we managed to pinch a 1-2 win, swings and roundabouts.

I'd be concerned about overworking Latte Lath, we always have the option of Forss at CF and Jones RW and keep Lath on the bench until needed, or not
Me too. I thought forss looked a bit last jaded last night.
My massive concern using this formation at home is the key to it working is the full backs pushing on and basically playing in midfield. Ayling has been great with his back to the wall in the last two but being creative offensively isn’t his bag which is why I’m concerned.
Engel is better at the wing back role but I fear for us with an unchanged side and formation

He's had assists in the last 3 games .. so definitely providing plenty enough
I'd agree that LL, RVDB, Forss looked leggy towards the end.

Hasn’t anyone got anything to say about the wing backs situation using this formation at home; it’s absolutely crucial to the formation working……

That's Plantar Fascitis it doesn't really just disappear and it can linger. It suggest he needs to have a good luck at his footwear, anything out of harmony with your true foot shape can provoke a recurrence of the condition, let's hope he was just playing it safe.

My personal opinion is that 3 at the back / wing backs is a lot more pragmatic for most of our starting options currently.
This includes the back 3/5 options, as well as the likes of Azaz and barlaser..

The 4 2 3 1 'dream' requires things we just don't have available right now..

I think some people are suckered in from last year's " we'll just score more than you " options that are about £25 - 35 million short right now.

4 2 3 1 requires such specific attributes in key positions, that without it, your a sitting duck.

If a CB was injured before Sat, I'd probably drop Ayling in the 3 , and replace with Djiksteel.
If LL is at risk of injury / leggy ... I'd start with Silvera up top.
If Forss is leggy , start with Jones and maybe half time switch.
Same with Mcgree if struggling, and Azaz.

But if you swap jones for Ayling, the formations and lineups are pretty much identical, especially when we have the ball

Ayling has 3 assists in 3 games I think .. why swap him out ?
Would much rather Ayling ran himself ragged for 75 and swap Jones on gently, than the reverse
