the Electoral Commission says meant some people were "regrettably unable to vote"

It will be interesting to see the numbers of those who were refused a vote

Too early to judge voter ID impact, says councils group
The Local Government Association, which represents councils in England, has sounded a note of caution when it comes to judging the impact of voter ID.

In a statement, it says it is "too early to properly analyse" the effect of the requirement, but councils will be reporting into a review conducted by the Electoral Commission in the coming days and weeks.

Polling station staff are legally required to collect information about the number of voters who were turned away because they didn't have photo ID.

However, much of the data they collect cannot be published - instead, it will be sent to the government and the Electoral Commission.

ID requirement posed a challenge to some voters - Electoral Commission
As we've been reporting, voters needed to show photo ID at polling stations today - the first elections in England to do so.

According to a spokesman from the Electoral Commission, the initial assessment is that the elections were "well run" largely due to the dedication of administrators who "worked hard to prepare for today".

The spokesman said confidence in the overall picture "should not overlook other impacts which can only be revealed through detailed data collection and analysis over the coming weeks".

But he added that previous research carried out by the Electoral Commission ahead of these elections showed "the ID requirement posed a greater challenge for some groups in society, and that some people were regrettably unable to vote today as a result".

Shameful

When you consider that in the last 4 years more tory MP's (3)"have been convicted for sex crimes than there have been convictions for voter fraud. It illustrates perfectly that the new legislation has been a pointless a waste of effort.
Totally get the frustration from the older folk.
Mind you it has been well publicised. Would you turn up to a footy match without your ticket and expect to be let in?

Things I need ID for....

To be able to work
To go to school
Football (via FA)
To go to College
To got to Uni
To get married
To register a birth
To get a bank account
To get a mobile phone
DBS
etc
etc
etc

I really can't see the issue with showing said ID to vote. Its been going on in other countries for years without drama

Things you actually need photo id for:

To be able to work - NO
To go to school - NO
Football (via FA)- NO
To go to College- NO
To got to Uni- NO
To get married- NO
To register a birth - NO
To get a bank account - NO
To get a mobile phone - NO
DBS - YES

To be able to work - works ID was not acceptable as proof
To go to school - school kids cant vote - was not on the list as acceptable
Football (via FA) - football ID was not on the list to be acceptable
To go to College - was not on the list to be acceptable
To go(t) to Uni - was not on the list to be acceptable
To get married - ? was not on the list as acceptable
To register a birth - a birth certificate was acceptable, many people dont have an origional - a photocopy was not acceptable
To get a bank account - a bank account ID was not acceptable
To get a mobile phone - :ROFLMAO:
DBS - i think your getting the drift of this
etc
etc
etc
You don't understand the point I was making.

Surely the people being turned away wasn't because they didn't have ID at all but that they didn't have any with them. People might forget to carry ID and I'm not sure forgetful people are a demographic that vote for a particular party.

I must have imagined showing my employers my passport and DL before starting new jobs
I must have imagined having to show the school my kids Birth Certs before starting School
I must have imagined having to show the football coaches my DL and the kids passport to register them in teams
I must have imagined needing my Passport to join the college
I must have imagined needing my DL and Passport to join the Uni
I must have imagined needing my Birth cert and Passport to get married
I must have imagined needing my Passport and DL to register my kids birth
I must have imagined needing my Passport to open my bank Account
I must have imagined needing my DL to get a Mobile Phone

In 2014 the Electoral Commission recommended voter ID to ease public concerns over voter fraud despite it not being a significant problem.

"Evidence collected by the Commission in its review of electoral fraud revealed that fraud is not widespread in the UK but, despite this, a significant proportion of the public remain concerned that it is taking place.

This has the potential to undermine confidence in the electoral system if not addressed."

Yet there are still people that do not have ID. These people could previously vote but now couldn't.

Voter ID was brought in to fix a problem thar doesn't exist, it will never increase voter turnout, only serve as another bonus to apathy.

I must have imagined showing my employers my passport and DL before starting new jobs. YOu may have but you don't need to.
A Birth Cert isn't photo id
I must have imagined having to show the football coaches my DL and the kids passport to register them in teams What a load of tosh. I am a coach and have no idea if the kids have a passport or the parents are drivers.
I must have imagined needing my Passport to join the college. You needed a passport to go to college? I presume it was abroad
I didn;t have a passprt when I joined Uni so I guess they didn;t let me in
Married - birth cert yes passport no
kids birth - you need one form of id a council tax bill or a bank statement will do
Bank Account - i'm starting to think you are nuts or look really really dodgy. YOu don;t even need proof of address these days
god knows how my daughter has a phone she has no passport. Maybe she's a master criminal.

I have no idea why you showed a passport. The point is you DIDN'T NEED TO

People often say there’s been little or very little election fraud of “ that fraud is not widespread in the UK”.

Here are the stats

Since 2018, there have been nine convictions and six police cautions issued in connection with cases of electoral fraud, according to the Electoral Commission.

9 out of a 60 plus million population

9 !!!!

I was a polling clerk yesterday so am probably better placed to comment.

Of over 500 voters like to guess how many were turned away through not having identity? TWO. Yes two. One of those went home and returned with identity to vote.

If this was representative across the country the issue has been misrepresented. The electorate included a fair number of 18 year olds voting for the first time.

Any complaints? Again only 2 people.

I bought a new Pass ID Card this week to open a new business bank account. I used it to vote but it was rejected by the bank. I have an old paper driving licence like several million (over 8million) of us and my passport has expired. There are a lot of people out there without photo ID.

Two votes prevented a Labour majority in Hartlepool.

What you won't see is people who turned away before entering the polling station as they had no ID and people who never bothered leaving home because they had no ID.

We need to encourage more people to vote, not add additional barriers.
