The National

Only just caught up on this thread but fully agree with you that horse racing or at least the fence races should be banned and the same goes for Greyhound racing. We rescued a Greyhound 2 years ago and are looking to rescue another one this year, beautiful creatures they are, many of which are treated horrendously and aren't given what they need to live happy and fulfilled lives.

I have no idea how you've been made out to be the bad guy on this thread, people can disgaree or whatever but I genuinely don't understand the abuse you've taken just because you'd rather horses didn't die for our entertainment.
Because just about Every debate on here turns into a a belligerent argument where each side thinks they’re in the right and is not prepared to accept another point of view.

Great post, some people just either spoil for an argument or fan the flames and then leave. We all know who these posters are.

Speaking of the tragic tale of Vyta du Roc Panorama did an episode a few years back called The Dark Side of Horse Racing. Its on Youtube.

Every single one of the people on this thread who have defended the industry should watch this and explain how they can still support it.

@Randy you should look at this from about 10 minutes in. Those horses taken for slaughter at the abattoir, care to explain what the gun is for as you are so insistent that horses are not shot?

It's usually a form of cognitive dissonance. People realise quite quickly that they can't defend a position logically so they dig in and tie themselves in knots trying to undermine the other point of view via personal attacks and whataboutery. If your argument is the winner you think it is then you should be able to answer any questions that are raised without resorting to ad hominem attacks or whataboutery.

Sherlock has exposed a hypocrisy and people are falling over themselves trying to explain why their particular hypocrisy is okay. It's a human trait and we all do it to some degree.

It's why people won't say where they draw their own lines because it exposes the hypocrisy for what it is. Which is why the argument goes nowhere.

There is no doubt that the Panorama programme is hard hitting and opened my eyes to certain going on in the racing world and the many changes that need to be made to improve the life of racehorses.

The area around racehorses coming to the end of their racing life or having retired through injury needs tighter controls placed around them and the unscrupulous trainers and owners need weeding out. I would say that the funding put into supporting retired racehorses needs at least trebling and should come from both the owner/trainers and the gambling bodies, they can all afford it.

The biggest issue I saw in the programme involved the abattoir and I feel they should be heavily fined and shut down immediately. I would also say that prosecutions should be made for putting people's health at risk and also for the disgraceful way they treat and killed the animals. What concerned me also was that there was a vet in attendance and they did nothing to prevent this disgraceful behaviour. I wonder how the owners of the horses feel after seeing their horses being disgracefully handled or could be ill-treated like that. Most of them would be appalled.

The abattoir has always had a bad name when it comes to horses and when I was in my teens I can remember them attending horse sales and would buy up good healthy horses/ponies. Many owners would remove their horses from the sales when he was in attendance and the abattoir would have others do his bidding to prevent this.

I would like to know what improvements have been made since that Panorama programme, if any and feel the British and Irish governments should be doing a lot more to regulate it.

But @Randy told me I knew nothing because I said horses were shot.

Couldn’t be he was wrong could it?!

The F***ing irony in that post. 😂

@sherlock1969 I'd probably remove the jump aspect of the sport if I was in charge. But the sport of racing horses is never going to be banned in my lifetime.

You said all of them were.

No I didn’t.

You said:

‘Plus if you knew anything about healthcare in horses (which you don't given you believe they are shot) then you'd know it's nigh on impossible to fix a broken leg on a horse.’

Careful of the traffic with that back pedalling.

Sorry to busy running a pub into the ground.

😂

You don't have to not like horse racing to recognise the damage done to horses in jump racing. I'll be at a course or two this summer to lose a few bob but it's obvious that a needless risk is taken making a horse go over the fences.

Do you speak to your clients/patients in the same tone you speak to people on here?

Everything I advocate on here is for the greater good. I’m sure the people I work with appreciate my passion for a fairer society where cruelty to animals is abhorred and compassion to the vulnerable, including refugees, is welcomed.

You wouldn’t understand any of that of course. As I’ve said before, if the moral compass is pointing us in one direction, you can be sure you’re heading the opposite way.

That certainly says everything about you.

Big man behind the computer screen.
Do you speak to your clients/patients in the same tone you speak to people on here?

Your quest to ban/abolish/remove everything you personally don't agree with says more about you as a self righteous person than anything else.
Are you not behind the same computer screen calling someone self righteous?

The lack of self awareness when people pull the keyboard warrior card astounds me.
