The tories weaponising ULEZ

I live in a ULEZ area and literally nobody cares. It is an insane scare story that, once introduced, everyone will forget about as it isn't actually that onerous.

As stated above, air pollution is killing children - weigh that up against people 'who need a car for work' and make your choice.

It's the completely wrong way to do something that seems like it would be the right thing. It's only London for now but the rest of the country will be on it at some point.

Anything where poor people will suffer and the rich will not care about paying it is unfair. Rich people can drive the worst performing car and just pay the fine but they can also far more easily just buy a new car. When they do where does their old car go? A less well off person buys it second hand.

When polled in 2019 about 80% of londoners were in favour of ULEZ. How many people will this affect? How many people are driving round in 17-18 year old petrol cars and 8-9 year old diesel cars?
I'm sure most people want the zone to be as emission free as possible but should disproportionately punishing the small number of people that can't afford to do anything about it he the way to go? It seems like offering incentives to go green is more fair than disincentives to those that can't afford to make the right choice.

Which area is that? Everyone is pretty angry about it where I am in Havering.

I'd like to see who was polled and where. I certainly wasn't involved in any poll?

Lots are, but as a percentage, it's quite small. 10-15% i think I read somewhere.

But then 10-15% of a population of over 9 million, is a fair few.

It's a shocking policy frankly and sponsored by the Tories until Uxbridge.

Those saying it only affects London... And other major cities introducing it, you think Boro will remain ULEZ free?

It is in it's nature a tax on the working poor and yet you have people defending it due to the mistaken belief it saves lives.

Most cars that would be effected by the scheme wouldn’t be worth as much as they would get for the scrappege scheme and public transport around the Outer London (especially the Heathrow area) is excellent, where if you take the vouchers it is even more generous.
Shows how desperate they are when this is their main talking point. Oh together with allowing 100.000 plus homes to be built on flood plains no doubt taking the water quality of rivers back to the Industrial Revolution!

London is completely different to. any other city, as it has a vast and high quality public transport system - most other cities dont, because of the lack of joined up thinking and investment over the years.

Couldn't give a flying **** about it. It's a local council issue, about as newsworthy as whether my bins get collected on time. But because it's affecting the London commuter belt where journalists live, it's national news every flipping day.
you will when it makes it way up North

Imperial College London, globally renowned experts in air quality research, have looked at the health burden of air pollution in London. Their research found that in 2019, toxic air contributed to the premature deaths of around 4,000 Londoners.

seems like a complete no brainer to me..Power to the Mayor. I have grandkids living in London...Fck the naysayers
But if everybody decided to pay it, it doesn't lower emissions.

There has been incentives £61 million was set aside to subsidise scrapping old cars, vans and trucks, there is only 2 million left apparently. There is a CAZ in newcastle and it has been introduced with no fuss. As mentioned previously who drives a 17 year old car?

Anything that isn't Euro 6 diesel compliant and Euro 4 petrol compliant is in the frame.

I bought a euro 6 specifically to avoid it.

That's not 17 year old cars mate.

Personally speaking I have asthma and allergies which are hugely exacerbated by pollution. So let's be absolutely clear. I want none of you filthy polluting ***** driving. I don't care if you've got a swanky new car.

If no one drives a 17 year old car then what's the point of introducing the thing in the first place. :D

The car needs to be more than 13 years old to have to pay. HMRC have said you can offset the cost if it’s a business use. That being the case it probably affects a relatively small number of people. I suspect it’s the Westminster bubble projecting their local squabbles onto the rest of the country - again.
I have a 22yr old 4.0ltr supercharged petrol car that does around 10mpg yet it is compliant, however my 14yr old 3.0 diesel fitted with every environmental cleansing gadget and does 40mpg with no particulate emissions whatsoever is not compliant, why is this ? Its another tax on the poorer folk in our society.

That’s not correct, mine is 9 year old and is non compliant. I’m all for ULEZ but this has been rushed in without giving people time to get their finances together. A year’s grace would have been the obvious thing to do to support the transition but Khan didn’t want to listen. There are too many cost of living expenses hitting the poorest the hardest in Greater London. I know many people with non compliant vehicles who rely on them for work, they will really struggle to keep their businesses afloat.

No it isn't, it's a blunt intrument designed to clean our cities air and stop killing people.
