* The Unofficial “Official” Boro v Millwall, Match-Day Thread *

Howson was our best player today. Covered every blade of grass.
I thought he struggled for a fair bit in the first 60 mins, seemed off the pace and looked slow, was still okay just no where near his best. Funny how diffferent people see different things from a game.

I've said it before, but we play Premier League level football at times, but finances dictate that we don't have the players who'll be able to do it all the time. When we actually work the ball correctly and it all clicks then we are a joy to watch.
Our Achilles heel will always be that we play on the front foot and will be susceptible. However, as Villa and Chelsea showed, if we rein in the attacking instinct then we can defend. In an ideal campaign we'd get in front then close the games out and I think that is something that will come as Carrick gets a bit more pragmatic. As it is though, we are a fun watch even when we aren't firing on all cylinders.

We are still lacking that final pass. There was a spell just after getting 2.1 up where we could have easily gone 4 or 5.1 up but for some lazy passing. Good win in the end though. (y)

It's incredible the number of our younger players for whom recent experiences, pressure, playing three games in eight days - including against two top Premiership sides in two big cup competitions. Then playing a tough game against a not very hospitable opponent today. The hard slog, determination, grit, moral fibre and bloody-mindedness to endure can be exhausting. Our lads are showing real character. Not the `character` anyone can read about in books, but that which is becoming embedded in everything they do. Carrick is a genius, and we need to keep hold of him as long as we can. (y)

Just got in from a non-league match so don’t know the ins and outs of our game but please say Engel’s goal was a 50 yard thunderbolt!!!!

At one point he did have a pop at goal from quite far out (think George Friend vs QPR) but it cleared the stadium roof by some distance.

Great post, 100% agree. I want him to be our LONG-term manager. More and more organisational theory stresses the 'culture' and as I said on my 'Bromance' thread, that's what he brings. Credit to Wilder: even though I found him weirdly cold as an individual, he did bring the good times back season before last. But Carrick is next level. Loving being a Boro fan - even, dare I say it, when we lose

Great to see Marcus Forss back, doing what he does best, releasing a powerful shot straight into the net. He's a cracking player and a real asset to the increasingly fit squad.
Engel scores his first Boro goal and, judging from his media interview, is obviously having local Teesside Accent lessons lyke.
Jonesy did a great job, though he didn't celebrate much. He's focusing on his own game.
Someone, somewhere, has been very astute and shrewd in acquiring all four lads [including Rogers] for next to nowt.
It doesn't have to be pretty, but after the last eight days, we're up to 9th and motoring

There's an interesting interview by BCFC TV with Tony Mowbray, who speaks very much in the same vein as Michael Carrick. It's really interesting [I find], that the notion that a coach just takes a group of young men and gets them to play football, is way off the mark. Tony talks of involving the catering staff, the ground-staff, sports scientists and everyone involved in BCFC. He talks of nurturing a winning culture, of building confidence - “inside” the club, not just on the pitch. Birmingham City's gain is Sunderland's loss:
