Tory MP suspended

Anti-corruption candidate that would beat whoever the Tories parachute in?

Rory Stewart

"Johnson is after all the most accomplished liar in public life - perhaps the best liar ever to serve as Prime Minister. Some of this may have been natural talent - but a lifetime of practise and study have allowed him to uncover new possibilities which go well beyond all the classifications of dishonesty attempted by classical theorists like St. Augustine. He has mastered the use of error, omission, exaggeration, diminution, equivocation, false equivalence and false analogy. He is equally adept at the ironic jest, the fib and the grand lie; the weasel word and the half-truth; the hyperbolic lie, the obvious lie and the bull**** lie"

Interesting poll from YouGov given the field work was done before this weeks government comedy show #3858...

The thing with this is - short memories.
Evidence of Tory corruption has been well documented over they years and, even more so, with PPE contacts Recently
And few cared

It gets the front page of the Mail and it’s like some people go
‘really, I never knew that, I don’t like them now’

Then, next week when Johnson does his messy hair chat to someone it will be forgotten.

Lib Dem’s have already said it is a nightmare for all non Tory Parties to support an independent (not sure why mind)
So, Labour have said they are going to put up a candidate

This is true, especially of those YouGuv target for their polling it seems, they always quietly produce a "correction" poll a few weeks after a Tory fall.

All these Tory scandals are death by a thousand cuts to the Tory support as their gains in the above polls keep getting smaller which will only add fuel to those who will happily turn on Johnson.

Johnson loves nothing more than the dull splat of a body hitting the tarmac as a bus hurtles round the corner. But this time 200 + of the compliant dangle bunnies behind him on the benches have been exposed for exactly for what they are. Not happy bunnies now. He’s lost the dressing room this time. Tick tock

While Johnson retains his polling lead, he'll be fine.

The papers will be back onside within a week or two and all this will be forgotten. The by-election will be a walkover for whoever the Tories put forward.

Probably true. But will also depend to some extent on turnout, and especially if the majority is down, even relevant to the turnout, which is bound to be a lower for a by-election.
It will be an indication of which way the wind is blowing. That’s why Tories, well this Libertarian English Nationalist version, walk around with their noses in the air…constantly sniffing how their own self interests are in danger. If they think the gravy train slowing….he’ll be gone

its'a very safe tory seat, really unlikely that they'll vote anything but blue, even if they the opposition stand aside for an anti corruption candidate

John Major - maybe he was a "grey man" but at least he has the balls to say what other conservatives might only think...

This is good. When even the man who privatised the railways thinks these guys have gone too far it's worth noting.

It's also a point that, I know a majority on here are Labour supporters and see it as a Labour v Tory thing. I don't see it as that. This lot don't represent traditional Tory values at all. It's really isn't a case of right v left at the moment. It's right v wrong

John Major has a long standing beef with Johnson but that doesn't make his criticism any less valid.

About the NI protocol he said today on Radio 4:-

“I think it would be colossally stupid to do that. To use Article 16, to suspend parts of the protocol, would be absurd.

“This protocol is being denounced week after week by Lord Frost and the prime minister. Who negotiated the wretched protocol? Lord Frost and the prime minister.

“They negotiated it, they signed it, they now wish to break it.”

What I find really sad in that report is this statement:
"Labour has ruled out standing aside in the forthcoming by-election".
Putting just one candidate up against the Tory might just pull off a surprise.

I don't know the maths but if a single candidate stands and the math works out they perhaps should be doing that. They may still have a candidate and an agreement either not to campaign or campaign for the next nearest party
