Underwhelmed by Cardiff

Given their recent form I was expecting them to give us the run around, but all they did was sit back and let us have the ball, while showing very little attacking intent. After our first goal I thought now they will have to come out and have a go, but they didnt. Well organised defensively is about all you can say for them.

General consensus from their fans is that tonight was one game too far for them. Injuries and tiredness taking a toll.

They were never going to give us the run around

Come on, we've all watched enough championship football to know that there's not much in it.

Sure, a team like Burnley or Leicester can be a cut above, but really everyone else is much of a muchness. We were never that bad, and we're not that great now.

Find the right balance and get a bit of confidence, and anyone can go on a good run.

Their good run was only 1 more win than our current run

They have been massively outperforming their xG which indicates that they don't create much and they've been taking their chances (or scoring wonder goals). I don't know which it has been to be honest. As an example they scored 3 past Coventry with an xG of 0.56 with 3 shots on target.

We've been the opposite and have been wasting chances.

It was a strange one for me because they’ve had some good results but I’ve seen nothing of them, but I kept thinking imagine having to watch this dross week In week out! They tried to do to us what they did to the mackems, but as soon as they went behind, they had very little response.

Stats.... Don't really count for that much in The Championship as far I've seen over the decade or so

Solid defensively most of the game till they had to chase, they had 2 chances created i think. I expected more from them in truth, looked powder puff in the final 3rd generally. Sunderland will be a huge test.

I thought they did well to frustrate us in the first half which was clearly their plan.

As soon as they went a goal behind their game plan went out the window and they knew having to actually get forward would leave them exposed to our counter attack.

It could and probably should have finished about 3/4 nil with the chances we had after Lath scored.

Being solid defensively, packing men behind the ball and trying to hit us on the counter, with the occasional high press, is the best way to play against us. Watford tried to duke it out and got beat, and they have better players than Cardiff.
Cardiff hit the bar and created the best chance of the first half with a one on one that they should have scored from.

We were badly lacking belief versus QPR
Belief and confidence are huge factors in this game
Had we played QPR again last night we would’ve battered them
Simple.
Credit to Carrick and his team for keeping the boys calm and clearly saying the right things that restored their confidence and belief whereby we now look like contenders….👏🏻

Liked how the compressed the space. No more than 20 yards between their front and back line at times. Unless someone times their run to perfection and hits a worldy pass, it's difficult to create much against that.

They sat a bit deeper second half but we also started using width better which spread their defence and caused some gaps to appear.

They can defend fairly well.

They can find the net with shots.

That can often snatch you quite a few wins with the rub of the green. However if a game needs flair and creativity in the middle of the park due to opposition, then you'll come unstuck as the opportunities to get those shots won't come easy, especially with injuries.
