Villa have competition for Rogers

If he goes it needs to be before Tuesday so we can get some of it spent this window

Whatever happens, I don't see the need to spend it this window.
We're certainly not going down this year, and I think even if we spend it, it's a fairly slim chance we make the playoffs. If we make the playoffs, it's probably below a 1 in 4 chance that it would make any real difference and see us promoted.

Would it be so terrible to sit on the cash until the Summer?

Yes because Carrick is here to fight for promotion now not next season or the season after so not backing him would be a dangerous move.

Btw we are 3 or so pts away still plenty to play for this season.

What makes people think next season will be any better or easier.

How do you keep a player? Once they've been tapped up, it's effectively their call.
I know. Its tricky. Obviously Carrick could have an influence. I would probably sell it as ‘you are getting better each game, gaining experience and developing your physicality by playing in a competitive league every week. With continued progress you could have your pick of clubs’ I dont think he will develop in villas u21 and his current inconsistency may not be tolerated if he is sent out on loan by villa.

It’s less than we paid for britt 6 or so years ago.

The world has moved on it should be 20 plus minimum.

I’m amazed anyone thinks this is a good deal ( apart from villa of course).
I understand your point, but perhaps Boro have made a promise to Rogers to not demand a fee that puts off Villa. Looking at the recent club accounts, a deal at £12.5 million is good for the next couple of years. It provides flexibility in what the club can do.

Besides, perhaps the club also has a sell on clause in the deal.

I'd expect Carrick to see the sense in waiting until the Summer. He's a sensible chap, not a child waiting for Christmas morning. I think you'd do him a disservice if you suggested that he would insist the money was spent now.

Same as Akpom it is only good deal from a pure fans perspective if we replace the sold player with someone better unfortunately we didn't with Akpom and not convinced we will with Rodgers but fingers crossed

I think we have to be realistic about how much we want to chase the playoffs this season.

If we splash out this window, we have about a 50/50 chance of making 5th or 6th.
Even if we make it, the 3rd and 4th place teams have won them 73% of the last 15 seasons, with it increasingly favoring them in recent years (Blackpool in 08/09 were the last team to win it from 6th).

I just think we'd be foolish to go all in when our chances of it paying off are around 1 in 20.
Just my guess of how likely we are to make the playoffs of course, but I don't think we can make 4th whatever we do, and the lesson of history is that the 5th and 6th placed teams don't do well in the playoffs.

It’s a massive decision for us - picking the right striker to invest the Rogers sale money into.

I’d wait until the summer and make sure we get the right man

Great input that Blackpool in 2009 were the last team promoted from 6th. Shows were really not likely to go up this season.
