We want promotion, obviously, but being in the champo isn't all bad..

Season’s that we’re worse than the 2016/2017 season..

2009/10
2010/11
2011/12
2012/13
2013/14
2017/18
2018/19
2019/20
2020/21
2021/22
Well I disagree, just my opinion. In all of the seasons listed above I expected us to win some/most weeks (especially the Pulis season when we came 5th!).

In 2016/2017 there seemed to be absolutely no belief that we could get a win anywhere and we celebrated draws with Arsenal and City the same way we celebrated victory at Old Trafford as a newly promoted side in 1998. And the manager acted like they were actual victories, and mostly behaved like they were all down to his brilliance.

It was awful newy.

We`ve had relative "success" in the Premiership: if we go up with Maestro Michael at the helm, it will be certain - with his Premiership, International and European experience - he will build the best Premiership side Boro have ever seen. He has the contacts and connections, but more importantly, he has the knowledge and the skills to share and nurture a team of winners. Not just "well-drilled" or "organised" [boring / predictable]. I hope he exceeds our wildest dreams and he probably will. He will eventually move on, so lets get on the ride and enjoy every scintillating moment whilst we can (y)
As good as carrick is money is the number 1 factor in premier league success and the figures involved are absolutely frightening we simply dont have the money to become an established top half side

I agree, the 2016-17 season was my worst experience too.

But if we go up, no illusions it will be a tough, tough season. We don't know where we will finish as there are too many variables in play. But if we give it a go, compete and fall short so be it.

The 2016-17 season was just a complete and utter sh*tshow, but like I said lessons learned, how not to do it.

We will see.🤷🏻‍♂️
If we go up of course I will look forward to it but I certainly won’t have the attitude that instant relegation would be fine because it’s all about the taking part. That said, I would expect us to be bottom half all season of course, and not dead and buried by February like we were, at least mentally, last time.

I understand the OP and agree the Championship is a great league. Boro need to be in the Premier League though. It’s better for the club, fans and area. Even if we have to take a few beatings each season.

Have to say I'm surprised so many posts are referencing the garbage 2016/17 season and not the glorious decade that was the 2000s. Have people forgotten our good times in the premier league? Winning a trophy? Playing in Europe?

Pulis was aweful.. the prem season we at least had hope. Traore running through Arsenal, Valdes upping his fans against Man Utd.. just moments. January things could have turned round..

There was hope, it was a slog, we did get beat, we gambled to much and our manager was limited.. a few of our players were complete bells too.

Still.. I’d rather be in the mix than watch a TP side eek our throw ins and dry the ball with a towel.. celebrating THAT as a victory!!

Not at all, but in those days we were well resourced, we were Wolves, or someone of that ilk (now). If we go up now there is no reason it would be different to last time other than a change in approach/attitude, which I’d be hopeful of but it isn’t guaranteed.

In 2016/2017 I don’t remember us ever really being in the mix for anything. Took the lead at OT on NYE and capitulated. A 3-0 win at home to Swansea probably the highlight, or Gaston’s goal v Bournemouth. Other than that I used to genuinely dread games, not just going but even watching on TV, the only time I have in my whole time supporting.

PL means expensive away matches and we can't expect to win many. It's an opportunity to achieve financial stability but that comes at the cost of the club falling out with fans (and likely the manager also) for not spending big money on players.

In the premier league against top end opposition.. we made a right asre of the squad.

Under Tony Pulis wins felt like defeats.. I dung want us to make the playoffs if it means we were stuck with him for another two years.

He was dump and straight after Monk aswell

I despise the premiership and all that it stands for. All that it means. The Championship is where you start to see football proper. In my eyes. I love it. So I am always torn between wanting the Boro to win and be as successful as possible and then not wanting to be in that scuzzy league.

Well you’re focusing a lot on my Pulis comment. There are a lot of other seasons on your list that I think were much better. Just my opinion.

Absolutely. That is what we have to aim for. Spending vast amounts of money guarantees nothing. Just look at Chelsea.
People say size doesn’t matter it does, we are bigger than clubs like them which will always help however they do have location on there side I think London and Brighton are more attractive destinations to live then Teesside

They’re having a bad season (very short-termist view) but you are obviously not saying the injection of money they had in 2003 hasn’t changed their fortunes as a club?

Long term, we probably wouldn’t be able to sustain a decade in the PL again like we did 98-09. I’d be happy enough with a shortish stint, personally, as long as it wasn’t immediate relegation. Otherwise I really don’t feel like I’d be missing out on much if we don’t go up, one season of probable misery.

Different if we have a couple or three seasons of holding our own.

This is the post of the ultimate optimist. It is crazy thinking, fantasy and totally incredible, but I am hooked. Come on Boro

There would be disappointment if we didn’t get promoted but by fluck I’d look forward to next season if we can keep Carrick…
I’m not sure we’d keep the players though 😞

So I guess we need the promotion…
Would we be happy with this next seaon ?

Every summer we and most other Championship clubs have a number of key players coming to the end of their contracts or loans ending.

If and when we do lose the 3-4 loanees plus cash in on a few other senior players there’s no way we’d just leave the team as above, there’d be other key men have to come in if we are to stay competitive.
