What are British values?

There's a difference between culture and values.

Values are a bit harder to define. If it's a British value then I'd argue it's something a significant majority of Brits agree with. Although the far right in the country treat it with contempt, what's in the human rights act isnt a bad starter for 10.

I don't think our values are much different from most other western countries in reality. Some might like to think we're special or better, but the reality is most western democracies are founded on very similar values.

The concern is those values are under attack by populist governments (often under the guise of protecting those values).

Values are very personal. Impossible to share values across a nation.

I bet we couldn't agree 5 priority values on this messageboard.

Some people value family above anything else. (I think family is much more important in most other nations BTW). Other people couldn't give a t0ss if they never seen their family again.
Some people value a professional career and success very highly, or even paramount. Other people would rather work the least possible to spend their time socialising or travelling etc.

Everybody is individual and national values are bollox.

Every business I’ve worked in will have a set of values around ‘honesty, transparency, integrity etc’

It’s all cack

People define their own values.
There are 65m in the UK and values are different.

Few, if any, would define themselves as selfish, money grabbing, bullying, lying, cheating

It takes all sorts.

Might it be best to start by defining the values of the Carphone Warehouse and then just extrapolate from there?

fair play
support for the pluck underdog/loser
stiff upper lip
understatement

not values but certainly national traits
