When’s a derby not a derby?

That thread on their forum is funny mind. Some Sunderland fan said they have had a better team than us since 1960 🤣

Then a Boro fan gave them the inconvenient truth that we have finished above them more since 1960. 🤣🤣🤣

I’ve heard this as well as they seem have all but deleted the 70’s from their memories ( apart from 73 of course) and most of the 80s to be fair.

It’s really odd.

A few years a Mackem who worked in our office was talking to me about football and I made reference our European games when he looked at me and said what Middlesbrough were in Europe… er yes I said… how far did you get he said…. Errr the final.

A derby is a footy match “contested” between 2 close rivals.
so it’s not a derby 😜

Strictly speaking a Derby is between two teams from the same town or city, such as Rangers v Celtic, or Liverpool v Everton - so even Newcastle v Sunderland is not “a real Derby”

I agree with you,
my post was sarcasm based on the fact Boro v Sunderland is never usually a contest 😜

When you actually attend these games you realise it isn't just another game, and that both sets of fans really don't like each other.

Both sets of supporters screaming abuse at each other whilst their fans arrived with the police escort, and two of their fans were arrested just outside the south stand. This was before the game.

Then after the game the fans who were all gathered outside the east stand were screaming abuse at us through the fence as we walked through the car park, shouting paedos and kicking the fence to try and antagonise us.

There's always an edge and why some of their fans are so desperate to play it down will always be bizarre to me.
