FAO Rob@fmttm, issues with bank cards declining.

I had issues today, took multiple attempts trying 3 different cards before it finally worked. Kept getting a 'Payment Refused' message despite funds and cards used fine elsewhere later in day. Definitely an issue with the MFC site.

The club use two different outside agencies, one for the web-site and another for the on-line ticketing. Maybe the digital ticketing organisation had no knowledge of new Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) requirements?

Strange one here too..my HSBC DD card didn’t work, but my HSBC Credit Card did..which was the first time I used in 4 years. I got it for emergencies only, and it came good when asked to do it’s duty 🙂

The Man U, Spurs and Chelsea games have seen massive problems occur. What is the solution opening the ticket office for cash sales as a back up as it is a lottery if your bank cards does not work?

Season ticket renewals soon, how many people will walk away if your can’t use your bank card to buy a ticket.

It is a massive problem and it needs addressing as a matter of extreme urgency by MFC or a press release or some information needs to be put out as how the problem can be avoided.

It is just wrong that this can happen. In fact it is disgusting.

Ive had the same problem. When I called the company that I was paying they said it was the bank that was declining the card and nothing they could do except they offered to take the purchase over the phone with the same card and it was accepted.

When I asked why they said it was a different security system between on line and telephone.
Been going on for about 7 or 8 days now.

Have noted this and will get a response.
The linked issue is just that actually people not being able to communicate with the club about the problem.
I think the issue was yesterday, everyone was using their phones to buy tickets, you have a certain period of time to buy a ticket and nobody at the ticket office to speak to when cards are getting refused that have funds available and have been used previously to buy tickets without a problem.

The acid test will be season tickets. I think the demand this season for season will be huge, potential season ticket could be lost due to the frustration with cards being declined. It could be a multi million pound problem.

You have a place at the top table and are the advocate of fans. Hopefully rob somebody can listen to you and the club can release a statement on this.

The club were able to make a very cogent statement on the Derby County litigation at short notice so this needs to be addressed as a matter of urgency.

It is disgusting what has happened, fans has tickets in their basket but could not buy them as the system was flawed.

All the banks are putting this extra security it. The club really should be on top of this ASAP. Otherwise they won't be able to sell any tickets online in the very near future.

Season tickets won't have the same problem. Early bird prices are available for a few weeks.. Completely different scenario than rushing to get Chelsea tickets before they sell out....

I am season ticket holder and I tried to buy a ticket with a Lloyds bank card, money in account, same with Halifax bank. All transactions were declined.

Same issue with my brother who got his daughter to use a virgin money bank account.

When it happened to me, I called my bank who advised that Middlesbrough football club are unaware of a new security measure that is stopping online purchases.

What several people are worried is imagine if you are trying to buy a play off or cup ticket again in high demand and you can’t buy them.

Can you make representations to the club to see if the club can speak to Lloyds bank, NatWest, Halifax to advise of the issue, how to rectify the problem.

Loads of posts of people with this problem, perhaps people can just mention the number of attempts trying to buy a ticket and which bank you had a problem with.

Something that needs to be brought to the top table.

Thanking you in advance, redlips x
The company are supposed to be using Strong Customer Authentication under new regulations - if they aren't then transactions may not go through

My HSBC visa debit card does not work at Barclays the only bank within 15 miles of us, but it works in Tesco’s machine.

Got this recently from my online Bank maybe this is why cards are being declined
Possibly M.F.C. are not 3D SECURE yet.

You may notice that we ask you to approve online purchases more often and that more
transactions may be declined starting from Monday 14th March 2022. This is due to new
rules to help make it safer to shop online. From now on, all banks and retailers are required
by law to use the 3D Secure system to help stop fraudsters.

What is 3D Secure?

3D Secure is a payment security system designed to reduce card fraud by checking that
it’s really you trying to buy something. At XXXXXXXX, we already have 3D Secure in place. Here’s how it works:

  1. When you make an online card payment that needs extra authentication, you’ll see a window pop up on the retailer’s website asking you to check the XXXXXXXX app.
  2. You’ll receive an instant notification from the XXXXXXXX app on your phone, taking you to the app.
  3. From here, you will be asked to review and confirm the purchase before returning to the retailer’s website.

What happens if a retailer doesn’t use 3D Secure?

All retailers have to be able to handle 3D Secure, but some might not yet be ready. If you’re
making an online purchase that needs extra security checks, but the retailer isn’t using 3D Secure
properly, your payment might be declined. If this happens, it’s a good idea to get in touch with
the retailer to see if you can pay them another way.

This.
I got the same from my bank (Virgin Money, ex-Clydesdale).

Not everyone wants a banking app on their phone and some may not even have a relevant smart phone.

Think of the consequences if your phone was lost or stolen etc.

I find it strange that the banks gladly allow £100 (five times a day) to be taken off anyone presenting a contactless credit/debit card, without a pin number or ID, but for say £30 online one off want several layers of security.
