Hands Up - Who backed Boris Johnson?

It's easy to mock, surely any reasonable person (especially a Teessider) wouldn't place their faith in such an idiot and go against their region's interest and values? After all, he was long deemed to be a calamity by pretty much everyone who knew or worked with him. Most Tory MPs even thought so. But nevertheless, it's always interesting to try and understand why people make such decisions and place their faith in such figures.

Anyway, it would be good to hear reasons why anyone would go for Johnson. One thing I've noticed is that is there are some who are still big fans. His craftiness and deceit seem to be high on the agenda as favourable qualities. But surely it's stretching it to suggest people were willing to put their admiration for Boris over their children and grandchildren as well as the future of their country and fellow citizens? But in reality, that's probably what happened in many cases.

Yeh no one likes a liar Expo. :D

I voted for the Conservative Party (no where on the ballot had Boris Johnsons name on it) mainly for 2 reasons.
After nearly 50 years of voting in elections I realised that Labour simply ignored our area because they thought it could guarantee they would get our votes without doing anything to help our area. A realisation that seems to have come to millions of voters in the North.
The 2nd reason being I could not stand the thought that Jeremy Corbyn could become PM of this country ( thankfully the Labour Party came to the same conclusion).
I always thought it would be a one off vote and I would go back to Labour. I now realise that if Labour were to win power and ignore our area I would do it again.
You might find it easy to mock but not as easy as it would be for me to mock someone who would vote for a party no matter what they did just because you always do.

Not me. But there will be thousands that wont put their hands up

From happy chappy, lovely, wifwaf Bojo to terror of the country. Anyone that voted for him got what they were given. A fkwit, for the fkwits of this country
Still slightly better than that Pig fker...

Didnt get chance to vote last time around but worth remembering he isn’t actually a Teesside MP so I would imagine most FMTTM chaps and chapesses didnt get the option to vote for him either. I understand the posters point however and yes he’s proven himself to be a disastrous liability. But wrongly or rightly he will be remembered and he had respect on the international stage. Even in Europe, where they were obliged to dislike him for obvious reasons. The partizan left who make up the majority of this board won’t like to hear it however but Jeremy wasnt the answer then and Sir Keir isnt the answer now. And thus for middle of the road, neither blue nor red by birth, voters like myself, it remains a coin flip and I wait to be convinced where my next vote will go. Im only certain that it will be policy that will swing it, not some knowsbetterthanme reminding me where i come from. In summary, if Sunak, Truss or Mordaunt take the leadership, Labour better have a proper rethink or the moment may pass them by. A bold move like convincing Andy Burnham to step back in may save the day but that seems way off at the moment

I didn't vote conservative myself, but can understand why many did. I was quire surprized to hear a few people saying time to give the other guy a chance (thinking that Corbyn had been PM)

As for Boris Johnson being preferable to Jeremy Corbyn.. I guess I could see that too, as much as I couldn't stand the lying fat privileged bawbag.. I could see how a smug scruffy looking chap who makes his own jam could grate on others.

Johnson has been massively protected by the media. The stuff we know in the general media is the tip of the iceberg.

Yeah, I dont like the guy who makes his own jam, but bring on the guy who lies and cheats his way through life who consorts with the KGB.
It’s been a bit like a huge stare sponsored game of ‘I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I’

Anti Semitic, A dangerous security risk, questionable friends, an economic disaster.

I did....there I put my hand up....not many will, especially now the **** has hit the fan. My reasons are mine and mine alone so don't come on here trolling me...I'm 48....you asked the question and I answered
I did too, which I've mentioned on here

He's been a fool to himself & in all honesty, IMHO, with what's happened to the Conservatives, especially the past 12 months or so, if Labour dont mount a serious challenge & win the next GE they never will

Totally agree. I know I'll wake up tomorrow to replies saying this and that, maybe some abuse. Its an opinion at the time.

Me too 👍🏻

I could never imagine a circumstance where I could be persuaded to vote Tory. That's not saying all Tories are terrible people. I had - and continue to have - respect for people like Rory Stewart, but they have nothing whatsoever in common with the vast majority of the voters in the so-called 'red wall'.

Every person in this country has a vote and the right to choose but I'll never understand why they voted in numbers for a conman who - surprise, surprise - went on to con them and everyone else. As for Corbyn being 'anti-semitic', well that one's been done to death on here. He was an ineffective leader, unable to manage media, but he's not and never was a racist. Johnson on the other hand - the one who people on here voted for while choosing to believe our awful print media - is and always was openly racist. He hijacked the leadership of his own party and installed a cabinet of people with awful, scary worldviews, some of whom border on being fascistic. But yes, better than having someone who makes jam and believes in being nice to people.

Interesting replies. People should not be given abuse in any form for the way they voted. Couple of further questions -

1. Did you get swayed to vote Tory by Johnson or by the Tory election promises?
2. Did you vote for Johnson or your local Tory MP - if it was Johnson are you happy with how your MP performs?

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't understand to hatred of Jeremy Corbyn, I have seen him speak and have spoken to him personally and he was the most open honest politician i have ever come across, his ideas were to benefit all of us not just the rich. I think he would have been a wonderful PM and guided us back to a more just society!

I'd be interested to understand (honestly understand too - not mocking) how you came to the conclusion that after 9 years of Tory rule it was Labour that had ignored your area?

I heard some voters in Hartlepool say similar and didn't understand it then either.

It's the wrong question to pose in the current circumstances.

The right question would be 'if there was a GE tomorrow who would vote Conservative?'

Sounds like a good idea for a poll... but maybe could just ask who people would vote for rather than weight it to the Tories if you know what mean.
