8 new cities for Jubilee, not for Boro though.

Can somebody explain what city status does, how does it," drive us forward"?
Anyone looking to invest does not care about " status" it cares about infrastructure. The Average Joe in the UK thinks were a city already ( as per answers on Quiz shows I've seen) it doesn't matter, its a meaningless title. It's not investment, it's not improvement and its of no value what so ever.

If you're a City, then you can probably stake a claim to getting better rail/ bus/ airport links. I suppose it gives you a better seat at the table.

"Look, we're a City, 400k live around us, and rely on us, and you treat us like we're not here", seems a bit more meaningful than "Look, I know we're Town, and there's more to us than parmo's. Can we get some better support please?"

I know it might not work that way, to the people that matter, but people can make more noise if they have a bidder drum to bang.

A joke of a list.

Dunfermline 55k people and irrelevant even in Fife.
Wrexham 66k people. Apparently the history of their nothing little football club played a significant part in their successful application. Proud to have beaten off a village in west wales. Granted for being the only place in Wales bigger than Northallerton not already a city.
Bangor 61k and the Scarborough of Norn Ireland, but smaller.
Stanley 2.5k with a run of huts in the deep south Atlantic ffs.
Douglas 28k people on a tiny island wandering around between Liverpool and Belfast. Have you ever been to this place; it is terminally dire.
Colchester 122k and was last significant when Rome had an empire. Even Chelmsford remarkably became a city ahead of this army barracks. Maybe Catterick should have F***ing applied.
Milton Keynes 230k and a sprawling Ingleby Barwick on steroids full of cockney rejects who pine for jellied eels.
Doncaster 158k of utter despair. The wider area is c300k, but much smaller than Teesside. It literally has nothing of note.It is 17 miles from Sheffield whose 2 clubs the people of Doncaster support. But hey, it was once Roman, so there's that.

It is an utter mystery as to how this list of nonentities has ever been granted city status. Even their own people can't believe it.
Middlesbrough covering Teesside as surrounding area, Bournemouth covering Poole, and Reading were the obvious 3 standout candidates in a list of 8.
It is an absolute joke.
Whoever led the Middlesbrough application must be a Mackem.

Or:
"Look, we're a town, 400k live around us, and rely on us, and you treat us like we're not here".

I don't think changing 'city' for 'town' makes much difference at that table.

As I posted on the other thread. Essex has been awarded with three new cities in the past ten years, Chelmsford, Southend and Colchester.
Levelling up!?!

Time to give up this scrambling for crumbs effort.

Stop electing chancers into nonsensical and money wasting mayoral seats and spend the funds where it needs to be spent.

In reality does it cost to become a City. Do the local Authority have to food the bill for letter head, road signage etc etc. Or is it a given.

Give over Rob.
With the political emphasis, and with mainly blue mp's and a blue mayor for the first time, the lot of them couldn't create a bid to beat F***ing Doncaster or Colchester.
Pathetic bid.
I had a very small part to play in the last bid and I know that it was an excellent bid. It was really well researched, highly professional, it took a long time to put together with lots of help from recently successful cities etc. We also put figures on how much it could/would mean financially to Middlesbrough and Teesside and the opportunities that could result.
BUT and this is a very big BUT we were never at any time told what the criteria was we were being judged on. In fact we didn't know who was judging. The process was completely blind.
I think that was very different this time. I wasn't involved in any way and don't have any knowledge of the bid.
