Akpom - Sheff U

Let’s play a quick game of maths:

Doubling Chuba’s wages from 30k to an entirely unrealistic 60k a week costs us an extra £1.5m a season.

You’ve got the best player in the Championship, who just scored 29 goals, in a position which is really hard to recruit (doubly so since he plays number 10).

Player is being linked with a move for £8-£12m because he’s nearly out of contract, but if he has another season like the last one he’s a £20m player. Even if he doesn’t you’d think £8m is as low as his value’s ever going to get depending on age.

How are you going to replace 29 goals and his creativity and vital importance to the team and the value of that asset for £1.5m?

What am I missing here, just give him whatever contract he wants and if you still want to sell him, sell him from a position where you can get his true value.

It is utterly remarkable that anybody would see selling Akpom for £8m would be a good thing.
Utterly remarkable.

May I remind folk that we finished 4th and get start the season without a left back, without a centre forward, with some punts from chubby Kieran and doubts about the future of our top scorer for 50 years.
I do like the look of these young lads, I think Gilbert and Rodger’s will do well, but not convinced silvera will adapt the model is effective when you sign actual experienced pros with pedigree aswell. We’ll be starting the season with Marcus forss or crooks up front. Dunno how anyone is not atleast slightly concerned lot of happy clappers around but your comment is the reality of the situation

After last season there is a lot of frustration that we don't appear to be as strong as we were and that without quality loans like Giles, Archer and Ramsey we will struggle to replicate last season.

Going in to the season with the fit and available options with have at full back and especially centre forward options is a concern.

If the window was now shut then I think we would struggle to make top 6 with the current squad,I don't see that as pessism more realism.

We have to hope that August brings a minimum of 2 strikers and at least 1 full back.

I appreciate all that Steve Gibson has done and continues to do but it would be an almighty kick in the teeth if we were to lose the only striker to get 20 league goals in decades especially as he appears to be showing a willingness to stay.

The one thing we are all in the dark about is the clubs finances,if we are reliant on Chuba leaving to keep the club afloat then Gibson is absolutely doing the right thing in keeping this private as announcing to the world we are skint would surely result in the footballing vultures descending heading straight to the reduced to clear counter.

I for one have missed my football fix and can't wait for tomorrow and the ensuing 9 months with the same enthusiasm I have had for the previous 45 seasons. UTB

This isn’t an unreasonable view but I just think the Championship is totally bonkers, anything can happen. It’s almost a crapshoot.

In fairness when we kept Akpom last summer I never thought “oooh play offs here we come”, and when we signed Archer and Ramsey I fully expected at least one of them to be a dud. Players surprise you in this division, it’s far more about the mindset and momentum a manager is able to build with what he has, and how long he can keep it going.

I just look forward to the ride. Even if we did sign Josh King or whoever, my optimism wouldn’t be vastly different. This league is anyone’s.

Funnily enough, I come in somewhere between the (what seems to me anyway) excessive optimism of Viv - which when you see the improved finishes and consider how Carrick has handled players actually seems reasonable - and the despair of Col and Indeedido - which when you consider we don't have a leftback, a proper centre forward, reliable cover for our ageing and vital CM - also seems pretty reasonable.

I think both sides have made pretty reasonable points to explain why they feel the ways they do, that's the nature of the game - opinions.

I reckon as things stand we'll push for/be in and around the play offs with a slightly worse off squad than last year due to age/fitness of a key player, the low probability of our star player continuing such impressive yet career contrasting form and a gaping hole at left back. I still share Vivs optimism in the general positive direction of the club though and at least feel more sure of team morale, unity and leadership than last summer when that plonker was in charge.

Our lack of ability to break teams down at times towards the end of the season worried me then and it does now, not sure Silvera and Morgan are the level of Ramsey and Archer either. I wonder if we had/have been found out a little after such a great run under Carrick, this seems to happen to a lot of teams.

Ipswich played a similar way to us under Mckenna but they had him from the start of the season, I think we'd have gone up if we'd started the season with Carrick.

I think as it stands to expect an improvement on last season, which is what Viv highlights as a measure of success for the club, is a big ask.

I do however look forward to us playing some good football and slotting teams occasionally, not something we did much of for a good few years!

@indeedido - Bit rich coming from me but there doesn't seem to be a clear reason for why you're being quite as short and abusive in some posts. Maybe expand a little if you're going to be that way? Looks rude and isn't something most of us associate with you, at least I don't think we do anyway.

But before that they bought and sold Maupay and before that they bought and sold Andre grey. We’re still at that Andre grey level trying to sign Maupay to replace him

Maupay - signed for £1.6m, sold for £20m, Ollie Watkins was already at the club and they signed Mbeumo as a replacement forward before he was sold, they also had Benrahma on the other side.

Andre Grey - signed for less than £1m , sold for £9m with a sell-on clause, replaced by Vibe and Hofmann before he was sold.

Neither of those are like selling Akpom for £8m, when he signed for £3m, with no replacement in place.

The thing is Chuba is box office he has grown the Riverside crowd. We looking at the largest opening day crowd we've ever had in the championship on Saturday. Chuba has generated the club so much revenue for what he achieved last season alot more than 8 million we selling him for that's for sure
That’s extremely doubtful. Do the maths. If you allow £15 as marginal revenue per ticket to keep the sums easy, which is more than the club reckons, then over a 23 game season you’d need to add over 23,000 per match to generate 8 million. Never mind a lot more than 8 million. He’s box office but he’s not that box office.

I don’t want to sell him as I think he’s worth more to us than someone else in no small part because of this.

But you’re not really factoring in your big if. “if he has another season like the last one”. Which he might. But he might have one like the several before and revert to being worth sod all. And then we’re paying 60k a week for four years for a player whose value has gone.

Both scenarios must be possible. We’ve seen both in the past. None of us can know which will come to pass. He’s a gamble. I think he’s more likely to stay on his current path here where it had really clicked, so I think we should try to keep him and he should try to stay. But not at literally any price.

There are quite a few people not factoring in that "if".

Can’t wait for the season to start. Forums been absolutely brutal through pre season
I laugh when people who write what they think is going to happen and other people getting worked up about how much we will get for him, at the end of the day no one knows what
is going to happen apart from the Chuba and the club, if he goes he goes if he stays then great. Nothing we can do apart from keep giving our support every week. I wont be losing any
sleep over whether he stays or goes. If he does go then I think the club will have a replacement ready for him.
Lets see how the new lads do and hope for a good season.
