Americas Cup

Spithill in Luna Rosa tearing Ainslie a new one again in Race 5. It’s going to be 5-0. The Ineos UK boat is just not in the same class.

Yep, looks like us,and Luna rossa tbh
Almost certainly now. Just heard Ainslie interviewed and he’s very despondent. Knows it’s all over. Disappointed as was hoping we could race UK in the final. They haven’t been in the final since 1964.

in light winds yes, when it gets above 9 knots or so, 13 knots, they are very competitive. Light winds they really struggle.

Ok so here we go again. About to start Race 7. Do or die for Ainslie who is 5-1 down. The pattern so far of this Prada Cup Final is whoever gets out of the gate first goes on to win. The start crucial.

And in that race Ainslie had a good start but because the wind is low - only 12 knots- it had no chance against the Italian boat. Lost by 1 minute 45. Race 8 coming up. Last chance saloon now. Lose this and UK challenge is over.

For any of you that are up, Ben Ainslie doing well so far :)

Sorry NZB, I just can't get into a 'sport' where you need many millions, if not billions to 'compete'.
And I know I'll be called treacherous for not waving my Team NZ flag, but it's a pass time for the rich (apart it seems from NZ where many people I know own boats, from 15 foot tinnies to huge launches) and I just can't get excited about it at all. In fact the sooner its all over the better for me.
Don't get me wrong, I love a day on the water and have watched many sailing races, and when I used to live in the Bay of Islands I have crewed on yachts during races (basically told when to hang on and lean over side while it tacked) and appreciate the skill needed to handle a boat but the Americas Cup leave me cold.
I'd rather watch tiddlywinks

And its over. Final result

Italy Luna Rossa 7 UK Ineos 1

Sadly the low wind just wasn't good for Ainslie but the Italians had much the better boat.

There was some hope when Ineos looked very good in the round robin races but the Italian boat was able to make adjustments to their hull in the time when US were repairing their boat.

Look forward now to the Americas Cup Final in a couple of weeks time. Luna Rossa v Emirates New Zealand.

No different from elite football now. You need millions if not billions to compete at the very top level.

Predictable in the end. Italians dominant. Ainslie gave it his all but the boat was inferior especially in those conditions.

It’s a good point about football. Ineos invested £110 m into the challenge. Not billions. Bayern Munich recieved exactly the same amount from their main sponsor just this year.

No it's a fair point. I think though any elite sport (NFL, Premier League, Champions League) etc you need billions, not millions.
That's the nature of sport now. Although we all thought Leicester broke the mould, look at the owners. Money talks.
So yes, owning these racing yachts is a billionaires game, racing and crewing them is a normal persons game, just like most sport.
