Boro to appeal Dijksteel red card

Us not beating Cov guarantees we won't play Sunlun in the play off semi, and I don't want that. Don't want us to get dragged into a "derby" match. Play some kids. Lets have a look at the future!
Here's the preference order of who I'd rather we'd faced in the semi-finals from those sides possible;

Blackburn
Millwall
Coventry/West Brom
Sunlun

Granted out of all the 5 sides we could face at all, I'd most want Blackburn or Millwall over the 2 legs, so I'll be keeping an eye on all the games whilst we're playing but especially theirs.

Blackburn whilst still mathematically possible are as close to NOT being our opponents as you can possibly imagine, even if they're winning and the other results allow them to sneak in they're 99.9999999% certain to be playing for 6th, so my opinions on what we should do/how we should play against Cov are going to vary depending on what is happening at the Den and our likelihood of facing the Wall, which is IMHO the best we can reasonably hope for.

I also of course want Boro to win every game, though of course there is the nagging "greater good" element.

IF the Wall are beating Blackburn at home, then all well and good, I want us to smash Coventry and this would sit far easier with me as a fan for the individual game too and give us that "momentum" going into the playoffs.

IF the Wall are drawing OR getting beat, then West Brom or Sunlun winning away, both against opposition on the strong side with admittedly nowt to play for, would let them into as high as 5th and have them as our possible semi opponents if Coventry get nix against us as you say. If this is happening then whilst a defeat against them wouldn't sit very well with me (especially after the last two results) I "wouldn't be too disappointed" to get a draw against the Sky Blues, thus ruling out the side I'd want to face the least as possible opponents as well as a side who are much of a muchness compared to Coventry.

The "smart game-management" side of the equation would say that the potentially most rewarding thing to do in the first instance would be to sit tight on the game and see it to a draw at half-time at least. Again Coventry may well be quite happy to do this too, a draw guarantees their playoff berth full stop after all. After which reassess your options, depending on how the other matches are going. In any case, needing to change the outcome of any game one way or the other is much easier for both sides when the draw is a base to start from.

Carrick may well opt for starting a lighter side than our preferred eleven as you say, but even if he does you can guarantee he'll have a bench as full of our big-hitters as possible to give them gametime ahead of the playoffs and to have more potential to change the result if the outcome of doing so becomes favourable. If Millwall are winning then I wouldn't be surprised if our team on the field becomes a good deal stronger off the back of it.👍

I want us to win the game and we can worry about who the opposition is later. Didnt Karanka 'throw' the last game of his play off season to as to avoid Ipswich? Look how that worked out
Tbh the outcome of the Karanka playoff final was coincidental in terms of our last match of the season tactics, ie not effected by it whatsoever.

It certainly didn't affect our form, momentum or motivation going into the playoffs; the 2 Brentford results will testify to that. In addition to this, playing out a bore draw also may have had a positive outcome as it helped ensure that we were far less likely to have more injuries for the playoffs to go alongside Paddy's.

No matter who we'd faced in the semis it's likely we'd have faced Norwich in the final even with finishing 3rd, they'd have probably tore Brentford up overall in their own semis, though of course there's no way to be 100% sure. Even so this remains the only possible, but less likely negative effect.

The positives seem to balance the negatives out. Therefore I'd wager that AK wasn't wrong to take that that approach; he reasoned that we'd have a decent chance of getting to Wembley with Brentford as semi opposition and was proven right. In the final of course anything could happen regardless. And it did. 🙄

Have we actually appealed it? Would have thought the outcome would have been decided by now.

Normally there's an official announcement of the appeal, which I haven't seen. I'd be very surprised if we don't appeal such an obvious mistake - or maybe Carrick isn't bothered about the 1 game ban and doesn't want to rock the boat before the play-offs begin.

That’s what I was thinking, it’s usually announced on twitter and there’s been nothing.

Beginning to think we haven’t appealed it.

Due to goal difference there is no chance we will be playing Blackburn in the semis and only a slim chance of playing West Brom.

I don't think it was a straight red card, but appealing is a bit of a distraction and its a little to play for game that he misses?

Having him available for Monday may mean he can play RB, and Smith CB... meaning Lenihan could be rested/brought off after x amount of minutes if they're worried about losing him?

If Lenihan got injured.. we really would be F***ing ****ed.

Happy to be shot down but I’m not sure we have much of a chance on appeal. Neither Paddy nor Lenaghan would’ve prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity in my opinion.

Hopefully I’m wrong

It's a weird one though isn't it. He sort of fouled him on the turn. If they're red card offences then there'd be red cards all the time. It's different to the unusual fouled when clean through. That said I don't think the appeal will be successful

It's not quite meaningless, though a lot depends on how the other games pan out. If Millwall manage to grind out a win at home against Blackburn which is hardly unlikely, they'll be our opponents over 2 legs if we avoid defeat and personally I'd much rather face them than Coventry in these matches.

Should Millwall be up and in control at half-time then I'd either want us to put Coventry to the sword (OK, Akpom hitting 30 league goals for the season proper or us reclaiming the final title of Championship top scorers by outgunning Burnley in the last game AREN'T season defining, but both would be bloody nice) or at the very least grinding out an utterly tepid draw (which I imagine Coventry would have less qualms about as that's their likely PO berth still guaranteed)
Totally agree. I'd much rather face Millwall than Coventry but really we need to play well on Monday for the full house and for momentum therefore i'd hope for a full strength team where possible. I actually think if Coventry face Luton they will beat them over two games. And we would play Coventry if we can get past whoever we face. Millwall will be tough though especially at their place being bombarded and trying to get in our faces. With a near full strength team we can see them off even if we got beat 1-0 or 2-0 at their place...
So many permutations though but I fancy Millwall at home versus Blackburn who look so poor to me....
Oddly, I'd prefer to play Luton over 1 game at Wembley than over two games....

The ball is already running away from Hugill before he makes contact with Dijksteel.

If Dijksteel doesn't stop him, Lenihan wouldn't have slowed down and would have cleared it up.

McNair had already stopped before the contact was initiated, so I'd agree he wouldn't have stopped it, but I think Lenihan would have.

It's a yellow card for me.

Paddy hadn’t stopped, he’d just never read the danger and hadn’t started as usual.

I get what you mean about Luton mind. Wembley has a big pitch so plays to our strengths for the full match up more too.
