Boro's most iconic goal in our 146 year history

Talking about this with the lads earlier.

Got to be Maccarone's last minute goal against Steaua Bucharest, surely?

Another mention was Hendrie's winner against Luton in the last game at Ayresome.

The Carling Cup final goals.. the timing of them, not really spectacular.. don't think they come into the conversation.

There may have been iconic goals scored at important moments before we were all alive, of course...

Any other suggestions?

I disagree.

The goals that led to our only silverware in history have to be part of the discussion.

In fact I would argue more so than Maccarone’s goal which gave us a great moment but won us nothing.

Iconic is an interesting category. Not necessarily the best of most important, but one that particularly stands out then I'd say. The one that most immediately springs to mind when you think of Boro probably?

I'd say that Maccarone diving heading is it for me. Not as important as the carling cup final goals, but it is more "iconic" IMO.

Cup final goals are up there though.

Others might be:

Hasselbaink free kick v City and his header at the Stadio Olimpico.

Juninho diving header v Chelsea and his goal at old Trafford in the 3-3 draw.

Emerson rocket away to Sunderland.

Branca's debut goal v Liverpool.

The magnificent team goal under Karanka with Bamford finishing it off.

The one that won our first major cup .. end of thread surely?

Which one? The Zenden penalty?

I personally don't think that springs to mind as iconic.

Maccarone's header isn't the best goal we've ever scored.

I'm talking historic, iconic, a moment in time, the scenario... it's the one that comes to mind more than any.

For me it should have been Festa's goal against Chesterfield at Old Trafford, the one which should have put us in the FA Cup final, but then we let them score. It's the one that always comes to memory, and I think it's because of how it went over Juninho's head

Then I would have to say Derek Whyte's run down the left and the cross for John Hendrie to slot home, effectively sealing our promotion to the Premier League and being the last goal at Ayresome Park. For me anyway but I can understand Maccarone's diving header which made the front of tee shirts.
