Can you admit that Southgate is doing a great job yet?

That's just nonsense. In the early 2000s we had Terry, Cole, Gerrard, Lampard, Ferdinand, Owen, Rooney, Scholes, Beckham. That was a much better squad than the current one, as much as I like the current team. But never achieved anything like Southgates teams.
Let's start from the back
Shaw Maguire stones walker

If he can win a world cup with that back 4 then Gareth would be indeed a miracle worker

Depends which Maguire it is mind. If you only watched tournament Football you'd think he was one of the worlds best footballers. 😅

Certainly this group B has been a gift from the gods no quality at all England apart
It's certainly not been the trickiest granted, though all 4 sides in it were in the top 20 in the rankings.

It's not the easiest either, I believe that honour goes to Brazil's aside from them.

Nope…One of the strongest squads we’ve ever had at our disposal but one of the worst managers.
Pickford or Seaman or Shilton
Maguire or Rio or Des Walker
Shaw or Ashley Cole or Stuart Pearce
Rice or Lampard or Robson?
Foden or Beckham
Kane or Shearer or Linekar

Very few of the current generation would at their current ages would be automatic in the 2012, 2008 or 1990 squads. We have lots of talented but inexperienced wingers and 10s, we have 1 good CF, 1 very young good central midfielder with a lot of averageness around him. We don't have any top quality defenders.

Nope. Not convinced. I expect all that and more with the players he has.
Then you need to give your head a shake, you expect this squad to be the best in the world and win all the trophies when there are at least 3 better squads out there, maybe 4 or 5.

On paper means fu(k all. This is the best england squad for generations, we win in spite of him not because of him, in my honest opinion.
Please please flag this conversation if we win the world cup because I will love to proven wrong.
So you can only be proven wrong if he wins the world cup? There are no other scenarios where you are wrong? So you truly believe England have the best squad in this tounrament? HAve you seen our defenders and central midfielders and backup CF?

It is a results business.
Semi at last World Cup, Final at last Euros, win the highest rank Group in this World Cup.
He deserved to lead the team into this competition and is making progress again.

He doesn't pick the team I would, but he keeps doing enough. You simply can't argue with that.
We have some outstanding players who can hurt ANY team at this tournament. He has a club style team spirit that means the weaknesses can be covered.
With a bit of luck we could actually win this competition. Any team needs that bit of luck. I hope Southgate gets it, as he is a fine man.

You expect that with the defenders we have available to us btw? No doubt when Robson brought in Rav, TLF and Emmo to attack with you suddenly expected us challenge Man U, Liverpool and Newcastle in the Prem then.

You must have frequent disappointment in your life.

Don't know whether its nostalgia or fact but I don't feel like the standard of the top international teams is anywhere near what it used to be, look at the great Dutch teams in tournaments from the 80s and 90s, the same with Brazil and Germany.

I look at our squad now and don't think many of our players would get into the Italia 90, Euro 96 or squads from the Beckham era. How many of this Dutch team would get into the squads with Rjikaard, Van Basten and Gullit?

I don't know, maybe the game has changed and we don't produce the superstars like we used to, or maybe the average players have just got so much better nowadays that everyone is just at a higher level.

Alf Ramsey is clearly head and shoulders above the rest as he won the world cup.
His lows were lower than southgates though, his qualification record was poor.

Tournament football is very different now to what it was in previous eras, if you compare the group stages to say Italia 90 its a lot easier to get out of the groups now than what it was then.
Not sure I agree. In 1990 how many of that Egypt team had grown up playing for european teams? Republic of Ireland akin to Wales today. Cameroon go t out of their group through a great spirit and some talent, but were very naive team, half that squad had never played outside the cameroon league. I agree that the very worst sides today are worse than 1990, because of the WC expansion to 32 teams. But we have only faced one team of that ilk in three competitions (Panama).
Southgate seems to be a very good tournament manager, we put away the really poor sides and can grind out results against the better teams. For pure results he's up there with the best managers we've had.
Agreed, his man management, his professionalism, and his character has rubbed off on the squad. The players actually want to play for him, and don't whine when on the bench
