Can you admit that Southgate is doing a great job yet?

12 of those goals came against Panama and Iran to give a bit of balance to the argument.
are you saying previous england managers have never played minnows?

Egnland failed to score vs Costa Rica in 2014, failed to score against Algeria in 2010, only scored 2 vs Trinidad & Tobagi in 2006, didn't even get the chance in 94 to play a minnow, scored just once against Egypt in 1990, failed to score against Morroco in 86. None of those teams are as good as the Iran we put 6 past or the Wales side we put 3 past. Those England managers must have been playing reverse, let alone with a handbrake on.

He also didn't manage us through a qualifying campaign. His entire England legacy is built on 5 games, at a home tournament, of which we won 2/drew 3 in 90 minutes and didn't make the final (as Southgate did).
What I would give Venables credit for, is that he didn't have a great squad, he had some very good individuals, and managed to shore up the weaker areas very well.

1998 lost on pens. 2002 lost to an excellent brazil side, a game we could of should.of won after tooth got sent off. 2006 lost on pens. 2010 we were bad from the start.
I mean we always seen to have similar exits to tournaments other than 2010, 2016 I've seen us lose on pens 5 times.
Southgate hasn't done much different to other managers.

Holy ****, this is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.
2008 didn't even qualify, 2014 bottom of our group, 2000, 2010, 2012, 2016 utterly miserable and embarrassing. You are so ridiculously biased its untrue.

No can’t agree with the Opening Statement. I think Southgate is the luckiest England manager ever. He came to the role at a premium time in English football. He has won nothing . He has been blighted by his absolute loyalty to players who are not the best available - this will cost us in the long run. I hope he ‘happens’ on our best 11 but it won’t be by choice as people like Stirling, McGuire, Saka and Mount - players in his preferred 11 are simply not the best we have.

Most goals ever by England in a group stage-2022. Most goals ever at a Euros 2021. Most goals ever at a World Cup 2018. Most goals ever scored in a calendar year 2021. Most tournament wins by any England manager. All under Captain Cautious.....
Well I for one won't be measuring our success or lack of at this cup based on calendar goals scored during the year 2021.

The USA game and the first half of this game were dire.

I worry for us if/when we get to quarters.

But I hope I'm wrong.

Lets not forget that until a bit of Gazza genius (nothing to do with tactics) we/he was struggling against Scotland and that was on the back of a 0-0 draw with Switzerland.

Venables changed the shape at half time in that game I remember watching it and I remember watching the re-run during Covid. He took Stuart Pearce off and Brought on Jamie Redknapp who sat in front of the defence. That allowed the likes of Gazza and McManaman to get higher up the pitch.

Venables got a lot of credit at the time for changing the game, Scotland were the better team in the first half and he changed the momentum of the game.

I think Venables was known as being a good tactician and showed enough of that in his club career as well. I think you'll find I've given Southgate credit for other areas of his management but I don't think he's the best in every area, he's not perfect.

Hmm, the strikers he had as his disposal though:

Shearer, Ferdinand, Sheringham, Wright, Fowler, Cole, Collymore.

Not a bad bunch.

I don't know, maybe the game has changed and we don't produce the superstars like we used to, or maybe the average players have just got so much better nowadays that everyone is just at a higher level.
I think the overall standard is much higher nowadays.

Also we all have that tendency to look back through rose tinted specs, not just at football but life in general. Think of the posts on here from time to time about how the 'town isn't like it was years ago'.

Southgate switched Foden and Rashford and they both score, yet he doesn't get credit for it.

Venables would have been slaughtered if social media existed in 96. "We won't get out the group" after a draw with Switzerland, "Why isn't he picking Redknap" before Scotland game, "First half was awful, we got lucky after that" against scotland, <silence> vs Holland, "Spain were far better for us we will get beat 4-0 if we play like that vs Germany". etc. etc.

I didn't even mention them other tournaments. Not worth mentioning for more reasons than one.
Think you all taking what I'm saying way too much to heart.
I'm just saying he's not a great manager. We would of got the euro final with that run we had and the players we had with anybody in charge. My opinion of course.

I'm not pining for the glory days of Iceland in 2016 though, but I think sometimes you can have a bit of balance. This is the problem on this board everyone picks a side and then argues about it until they are blue in the face.
Well I was being a bit facetious, and you're right the wins over Panama and Iran won't count for much.

The appearances in the semis and final will though.
