Chuba Akpom

I wonder whether the fantastic relationship he's enjoyed this season with the supporters will be a big influence?

I'm pretty sure he has never had the sort of adoration he gets anywhere else and in interviews he always seems like a grounded, level headed bloke.

To spin things around a little, does he feel a loyalty to Carrick for changing how he plays and turning him into the player he has become?

I hope we manage to get a new contract agreed with him but as others have said, if that's not to be then there's no way I'd be selling him. His goals will be invaluable next season and IF they fired us to promotion, he might yet still sign a contract anyway.

Me too. I think we'll get "an offer we can't refuse". The thing is, with all of the money in the world, how and who do you replace him?

Gyökeres?
You don't so we won't. If we sell him for £25m and buy Gyokeres for £20m you have to ask what was the point? Plus, Gyokeres is not going to move to a championship club so we won't get him.
If the train keeps rolling, I fully expect us to sell him at the end of next season, regardless of what league we're in but I don't see any situation in which it is in our interest to sell before then.

I'd rather break the bank to keep him on a contract extension than look for a replacement.
It's just not only the goals though. He's integral to our style of patient build up play.

I don't think he'll move on. Gibson has proven with the likes of Tav that he will honour an agreement and I fully expect Chuba to sign a new contract with an agreement that he can move the season after if we don't go up. We'll have to pay him Prem league wages but we're already doing that with Steffen so we'll save on Steffen's wages and spend on Chuba's.

Like Mitrovic with Fulham, Gyokeres, Bereton Diaz and so on, Chuba is worth far more to us than the money anyone is going to be willing to pay.

If he doesn't want to sign, we keep him anyway. Doesn't seem like the type of player who will go on strike. If he scores another 20-30 goals in a whole season, we will get promoted and that's worth a lot more than missing out on a fee now.
Agree with all of that.

Also, boro would pay something like 15m plus for a player like chuba in the open market; probably more like 25m to 30m given the goals he has in him.
Therefore, why not think about it differently and agree to give him like 2 million signing on fee and premier league wages - after all, we are saving 20m finding a goal scorer like him with no guarantees of that player scoring the goals for the money we would’ve paid.
We have the asset already so look after him 🤔 ?

If we could get Gyokeres with the money then I think it would be worth it in the long term. He's only 24 and I think he's the best player in the league (despite Chuba scoring more). Really wish we'd pushed the boat out for him last year. Imagine the two of them playing together!

One thing is for sure: I'd be bringing back young Josh next season.
Maybe. I'm not sure whether he can make the step up yet. If we're still in the Championship next season and aiming for the autos, our main #9 needs to be on a par with the likes of Archer, Tella & Gyokeres. I don't see Coburn getting to that level in the next 12 months and it's debatable about whether he would benefit more from being the main man at another club or being on the bench for us.

He definitely deserves a chance. I wouldn't have thought that Hackney would have stepped up the way he has. Thing is, our setup seems to need a fast, mobile #9 to stretch the defence which isn't really Coburn's strength.

Also if we where to stay down and if Chuba was to leave maybe we could still sign another forward and play 2 up top with Forss and another gem found by the recruitment team?

Football evolves and teams have too, carrick speaks about this alot and if Chuba moved on good luck to him, its been a pleasure.

Its a massive 'IF' of course, but should we get promoted how do we feel Akpom and Gyokeres would fair together up front?

I think that would be a gem of a partnership but I'd like Archer to join the club if I'm honest, I'd like to see what he would do in the premier league alongside chuba.

£10m 😵‍💫 it would make more sense to offer him a £5m a year three year contract to stay because you’d be looking at £20-25m for anyone near good enough to replace his goals

Will be released at the end of the season... lol. I think they might be in for a bit of a surprise.

It’s a real predicament because we can’t afford to lose him for nothing and we can’t afford to not go for it next season.

I have no doubt that he will scored north of 15 again next year if he stays with us. He’s been nomadic in his career, so I’m hoping he feels he has found his spiritual home. A prem move will probably see him sat on the bench for most clubs, I always feel it’s best for a player to go up with a team and keep his spot in that team before moving.

Anyway if we do sell, I have far more faith in our scouting to find another gem or in our coaches to reinvigorate a seemingly lost cause
