Cole Palmer or Phil Foden?

Who would you then have wide left and wide right? Al hypothetical of course as no way Southgate is playing anything that offensive unfortunately
Saka picks himself. The other side is a bit more difficult. You would hope Rashford hits some form by the end of the season but if not, probably Grealish. The alternative would be using Maddison on the left where him and Foden could switch positions to unsettle defences.

I think are very good players and different types of player so pointless trying to compare them. We have so many options in that area of the pitch at the moment that unless one of them gets a chance and scores then they wont stay in because they dont dominate games like - rashford can at times, or sterling could, or have a huge impact like grealish can when given the chance...i just dont think Foden imposes himself enough at international level....
You never go - WOW....look at that.
Palmer is too busy carrying his ego around with him - must weigh him down because at times he seems to stroll around like he owns the place - however, Bellingham owns the gaff and will do for the next 10 + years hopefully...
Those front 3 are going to be bellingham Saka & rashford or grealish backing them up ; all can open up teams with skill or pace. Foden and Palmer have good vision but not the pace or the guile to impact on the international stage.
Palmer might do if he can channel his talent in the right way and give up some of his massive EGO.

Can't see how Rashford starts on current form, to be honest on a few of his recent games I think he should struggle to make the squad.

I think Foden has got back on track after an injury hit 2022/23 season and is now fully trusted by Pep Guardiola. He's been overshadowed by Bellingham to some extent, but his form this season has been outstanding and he's still only 23 and improving. His manager had this to say about him at the weekend.

“Forget about the goals. Of course they’re important, but do you know how he played? How he controls and accelerates. He has become already a top-class football player,” Guardiola explained.

“He was before a little boy, good actions. Now he has become already a world-class top player. So good. He can play everywhere, especially in the central positions, which is really, really good.

“In the middle, I think in the (Club) World Cup in Saudi Arabia, he play really good, he understand more the game. His work ethic and how he runs, everything. He has become a top, top class player.

“He’s young and can improve. Always I had the feeling that Phil always had the sense of goal.

“Always had this sense of he can score. I met him when he is 16-years-old, he train with us and a little bit like Cole Palmer, arrive there and always have the feeling they can score.

“Phil has this incredible ability, this incredible ability to do it.”
Foden looks great at City because they play in a certain way - different to England.....no stars at City because of Guardiola however, Southgate wouldn't be able to leave out certain players like Pep does on a regular basis....
Foden will NEVER excel for England because its a totally different game being played than that at City...

Have you ever seen Phil Foden play? He has guile oozing out of every pore.
I don’t understand how people can’t see it. It was obvious to me watching him win the Under 17 World Cup with England. He’s strong for his size but not physically imposing so he’s developed an incredible football brain under one of the all time greatest coaches. He puts a shift in defensively too.

If Guardiola feels Foden is better centrally how does Southgate get him and Bellingham into the same team. Always feel Foden is wasted out wide for England but he doesnt get in ahead of Bellingham as the Nr 10
Bellingham is the best number 10 in the world, so you absolutely do not move him. Fodens either a brilliant backup or a wide player. I’d play left, because he’s still a goal threat

The answer would be to have them playing either side of Rice instead of having two defensive midfielders. Neither of them would be a number 10 but both would have the freedom to move into those advanced spaces when necessary.
It isn’t the answer though, because by doing that one or both will effectively not play as a 10 OR you leave rice to man central midfield on his own, which is a disaster waiting to happen. That’ll be exploited by the best teams.

We don’t need to be more offensive we already score plenty, we need to offer a better shield to the defence because it’s pretty average and was exposed against the good sides. Southgate WAS that offensive when we played Croatia with a midfield three of Henderson flanked by Ali and Lingard. CROATIA eventually got the better of it, exploited the space that Henderson couldn’t cover himself.

Don’t be silly one of his first actions was to go against the fa desires and boot Rooney out.

Southgate has controlled the egos and created a club culture better than anyone in my lifetime

Because he’s more dynamic than foden. Foden can’t even dribble around a player to get away from them.
He’s talented but he’s not going to do anything for England. Ever

One to bookmark! There are very few players of Foden's ability that cannot adjust to different systems and players around them.

For the original question. Phil. Not even close at the moment.
Awwwww Hya mutt head. How’s you doing.

One to bookmark, bless you, hanging off my every post, it feels amazing to live rent free in your head 😀

But back to the football, foden isn’t the brightest of lads…that’s clear to see. The reason pep is now getting the best out of him is that he gives him clear instructions, because he isn’t that bright, it helps foden focus on specific areas and subsequently gets the best out of him.
Southgate doesn’t know how to do what pep does, he puts more onus on the player to figure it out on the field of play (to an extent) pep has city drilled like soldiers.

Foden will always look a bit wooden for England and people will scratch their heads and say, why.
I’ve just explained why.

Bellingham is the best number 10 in the world, so you absolutely do not move him.

He’s been playing as a 10 less and less for Real recently. I imagine it’ll be reduced further when Mbappe joins in the summer.

Bellingham can do every thing very well, so I’d have no problem with us playing him slightly deeper as an 8, and him getting involved in all phases of play.

One of my best mates is a Man City fan, Foden is an outstanding player
To describe his run of goals “he’s like a tin of pringles”
