McMordie, you are a star. Thanks very much. How did you find them? No need for midweek fixtures on my part, it was definitely a Saturday as that was the day of the week (every fortnight) when we went north to visit the grandparents.

The follow up question for the board is which of those away teams would likely have played in a blue kit that season?

What was the weather like, start middle or end of season?

I know a few you can discount straight away, Heaton, Boldon and Blue Star play in black and white stripes, Stanley and Ryhope CW red and white stripes, Washington and Roker (I think) in red, South Shields and Annfield Plain in Claret.

Reyrolles are now Hebburn Town, black and yellow stripes. Wingate now play in yellow and blue, no idea what they played in back then.

Pools and Murton play in blue.

It was bright, CtC, but cold. I'd say autumnal, but it could also have been spring. No rain, just in case anyone has the actual rainfall records for mid-afternoons in easington fifty years ago.
My suspicion is that it will have been 73 rather than 74 on the basis that it seemed to be at a time before I got interested in the Boro, hence me initially dating it as the season before.

Probably Pools then CtC, because my (possibly fake) memory is that ECW won. Its not critical that I get the right game, as its just for an entry in the futbology app, but its nice to have some semblance of reality to the record.

The results are taken from old editions of the Sunday Sun. If you work out which game it was I can let you have a (short) match report if you want it.

It struck me that their results that season weren't unlike Boro's that year - winning virtually every game with one 1-7 defeat thrown in, like our 1-5 at Nottingham Forest.

If the first game you went to was an Easington home game, don't they play in blue?

There was heavy rain and wind on 29 Sept (the day of the Hartlepool game) according to the match reports and there was thick mist on 3 Nov (the Murton match). 3 Nov was the day we came from behind to beat Luton 2-1 in a top of the table clash in one of the best matches I remember at Ayresome Park.

Thanks again McMordie, for digging deep into this. There certainly wasn't heavy rain, so it's unlikely to be the Hartlepool game. Are you saying that Easington played in blue in those days? That might make it easier to pin down, if it were the away team in green. Do the match reports give line ups? We'd gone to see Alan Hood (later to be memorialised with the Alan Hood Cup). If he were actually an away player then that would help.
I didn't attend any Boro games until the following season so I can't use those to eliminate any fixtures.

I played for Easington under two ex former Boro players in the early naughties.

I’m pretty sure this doesn’t help your request but I got a nice warm fuzzy feeling for mentioning it.

Good to hear, Doom. Do you remember seeing any photos of them in a blue kit from years gone by?

Nothing to add except to say how much I'm enjoying this thread. It's great when you can piece something together like this and top marks to @McMordie for the research on this. Not that long ago @shaun71 similarly helped me with a match I went to at Whitby back in 1969 and it really meant a lot.

It's great isn't it. Shows the sense of community within the board and the collective information that has been retained but is beyond a Google search.

I'm anticipating a conclusion that I've never been to Easington and my first game involved teams wearing different shades of yellow, all five years before I thought it happened. With snow.

Graeme Hedley one of them?

I've asked the question in an Easington group I'm in, lot of born and bred knowledge people in there so someone should know. Hopefully.

Yes. Great bloke.

The other was the late Andy McCreash. I understand he played twice for Boro and made his debut at Anfield. Bringing down Dalglish for a Penalty.
Another top, top bloke.

Only found out a few years back Graeme was an Easington lad and managed them for a bit.

Don't know the other fella.

For the Hartlepool Reserves game on 29 Sept 1973, that evening's newspaper report on Newcastle's game at St James Park describes the day as "wet and extremely windy". Having said that, these are the highlights of the game on Youtube and it doesn't look that wet!
