England is a sports mad country. We’re not the best at it but we have a go. Football, rugby union and league, cricket, athletics, cycling, tennis, motorsport, swimming, boxing.
I do see your point and reckon it’s a strong argument too. The only issue I was raise is cricket and rugby are hardly mass participation sports. Even then, England are not as successful as New Zealand, South Africa and Australia (especially league). You see I would make the argument we possibly are the best at sport.
This century, World Champions at Cricket 3 times, Rugby Union World Champions, Finalists and Semi final in major international tournaments the Football.
England's women's team are the current European Champions.
The Premier League is arguably the best football league and most watched of any sport in the world.
5 champions league winners.
3 times as part of the UK in the top 4 out of hundreds of countries in the medals table at the Olympics.
Numerous world champions in Boxing, Cycling, Swimming, open winners in the Golf, several world titles won in Formula One. We've even had two winners of the Tour De France!
They loved an invasion/ brawl back then, didn't they, borders forverer changing. An entertaining look at how 'England' was formed after those pesky Romans left coz it was basically too chilly. It's 10 min but if you play it at 1.5 or x2 speed you don't lose anything. I'll be asking questions later on this so ..don't skimp . Northumbria , Lindisfarne ,York all feature.
England
I give you Will Shakespeare, the fact we're a nation of mongrels (and all the better for it) and our sense of humour.
And ....?
Pub culture is dying.England is a sports mad country. We’re not the best at it but we have a go. Football, rugby union and league, cricket, athletics, cycling, tennis, motorsport, swimming, boxing.
Sport is healthy and brings people together. It’s definitely a big part of the culture and one of the best parts too.
Pub culture as well. I was speaking to Norwegian colleagues about this a couple of months ago. I explained I have a local pub over the road from me. I know the owners, they know me and the Missus and we pop across most weeks. The Norwegians don’t do anything like that and mentioned it sounds fantastic and very social.
So reducing Corporation tax from 40% to 12.5% to encourage the 'Celtic Tiger' was about 'passion...and their own identity' and not the gods of euros and cents? The english worship the £ pound sterling - they have sold their soul to Saint Pounds, Shilling and Pence.. its their 3 in 1 Holy Trinity.
the Celtic nations have a passion about themselves and their own identity, the english do it from a position of aggressive superiority & triumphalism.
further, George isnt a Catholic (or jewish or Islam) saint, so that rules that denomination celebrating him, and those who do want to wrap themselves in the georges flag, dont go to any church for spiritual life in any way or form.
Heathens behave like Heathens.
however, back to the origionl posting about good things in the country - i say The Yorkshire Pudding is as good as it gets filled with english peas and a gravy (frogs in a swamp).
*makes small bet with self.

Invented Football
We have a lot to be proud of.
It is possible to be proud to be English without wanting to drape yourself in a flag and leather the daylights out of others or colonise other countries.
Whilst we traded in slavery, we didn’t invent the concept and we were one of the First Nations to realise it for what it was deplorable in every way.
Glad I can help in some way. They were all too slight for rugby, Lennon especially.Did Auden, Keats, wordsworth, Orwell. Lennon and McCartney really invent football? I had no idea. I learn something new on the site every day.

So they decided to create their own game. I’m pleased they did.
