How long until Football is cancelled?

Is it not inevitable now?

A January "circuit breaker" or will we even make it that far?

Brentford manager is already calling for this weekends games to be cancelled.

Saturday might be the last game for a while, then the mad scramble for reimbursement on train tickets hotel bookings for the likes of Blackpool and Sheff Utd, I have train and hotel booked for QPR in Feb, who knows what will happen.

I assume if they start getting a fixture backlog they can't deal with they'll have to?

Unless they start awarding results by a panel, but I'm pretty sure any team hovering in or around relegation would make a legal challenge against being awarded defeats against the higher ups.

I don't think we'll ever go into a lockdown like have seen previously ever again BUT I think that after Christmas we'll be in enhanced restrictions which will see large events stopped (well fans not allowed to attend for football for example), household bubbles and mandatory WFH.

You can certainly tell that the **** has hit the fan. The Gov are on full on panic mode. Adverts on TV, vaccine push, no lateral flow tests etc etc.

In SA the hospitalisation rate is 38 in 1000 - so 3.8%. We are looking at 1,000,000 infections by the weekend so potentially a 38,000 hospitalisations. We currently have 7,673 in hospital now. I can see why they are worried.

They are either lying about the 200,000 predicted infections or are risking the NHS being overrun just so we can have Christmas with families.

I hope the bit in italics is wrong, or I've over simplified it or something.

If the new variant spreads quickly then there's possibly rather a lot more cases after the opening last night of the Ally Pally World Darts Championship. I almost felt I could catch it off our TV.

Those figures are cause for concern. However, they don't take into account comparative vaccination rates. 69% fully immunised in the UK; 26% immunised in SA.

While I wouldn't want to gamble on how much protection the vaccine gives against Omicron, it is likely to make some impact on hospitalisation rate.

The section I took from Whitty last night was that whilst our vaccine coverage is greater than SA, it's also older. Vaccine efficacy in this country is likely to have waned more significantly as a result. Simple answer is the booster campaign and I can completely understand the need to get as many people done as quickly as possible.

It would be interesting to see the modelling on social interactions over Xmas. Work and educational settings obviously reduce but social gatherings increase?

I'm double jabbed and I don't want to gamble on the protection the vaccine gives Any variants. I know 4 people in the last 2 weeks who are double jabbed and still caught COVID and no mention of Omicron so assume it is Delta variant. Also 2 teachers at my daughters pre school have tested positive and I would assume they are double jabbed(my 3 year old is a close contact with them as she has been in twice this week). Over the last 2 months Covid has effected a lot more people close to me than at any other point during the pandemic my 13 year old has just recovered from it and my 16 year old step daughter had it 6 weeks ago. It's absolutely crazy and seems to be everywhere at the minute.

Same for me earlier in the year. Double jabbed in July, caught (assume Delta) August bank holiday.

To be fair, the risk of catching isn't really minimised by getting vaccinated as I understand it - just lessens the impact if you do?

It does lessen the chances - Delta was about 50% less chance I think but happy to be corrected.

Wouldn't shock me if tonight is the last of football before Xmas and even the New Year.

Premier League clubs are pleading with the FA to postpone games.

Brentford have 13 COVID cases.

Man Utd have reported more this morning.

Norwich, Spurs, Leicester, Southampton all have COVID cases.

Even Man City's staff.

And then there's already been 3 games PP in The Championship.

It seems ridiculous to continue the season while cases continue to rise.

Been told the EFL are meeting today to discuss fixtures. Wouldn't be surprised if Saturday gets postponed.
