Luke ayling thoughts

I thought Ayling has done ok since he's been here, probably better than Smith in most departments.

What last night showed though is how bad Dijksteele is in this system, and I used to rate him quite highly.

Dijksteele's control and speed of thought is too slow for this system, he gets caught out far too often, loses the ball or we lose momentum, he's got to go. Sure he's got a bit of pace, but he only gets to use it when he's messed up, so it's like a non asset.

We do need a permanent right back to develop though, if we're going for the long term cheap young prospects and short term older stop gaps options, which we seem to be doing. That's fine if that's what our budget is, and I don't think January is a great time to get in the players, so I don't mind getting Ayling in. We need to get him fit enough to last a full game though, until his replacement comes, which it will have to if we want play offs next year. This year has gone.

Ayling will have to do until next season, we wont make the play offs anyway. We haven't a right back at the club who can nail the spot down even when fit.

Him and Bola under Warnock were top quality
they were steady, but then Warnock doesn't play a technical game, doesn't expect defenders to be able to pass, and link up play. In a Carrick side, he lacks the technical and tactical ability to play at the level we need. I don't think he would take the first choice role at any top 10 champo side.

Boro fans do this with every player - a player gets dropped for not being good enough, fans forget how rubbish he is, and then want him back... Dijksteel is a bottom half championship fullback.

Luke Ayling is an absolute mile ahead of Dijksteel. He was Leeds captain in the premier league last season.

Ayling was awful last night gave away so many sloppy passes. I dont think he is fit enough which is why hes making mistakes, that said he probably hasnt played this amount of games for a while. We miss tommy smith.

Dijksteel is sloppy in possession and has a tendency to switch off which is massive problem with alot of our defenders he shouldnt be first choice for me. He did have a good partnership with crooks and jones at home and likes a marauding run but very inconsistant.

As has been said, you can see why Leeds were happy to loan him out. Some of his passing was horrendous last night.

I guess he's okay for a midtable Championship team, which is what we currently are.

Smith is well ahead of Ayling for me on what I've seen so far. I'm hoping Ayling is just taking time to get up to proper match fitness as so far he seems to be blowing out of his 4rse after an hour. Against Bristol City there were a few times where he seemed to be gasping for air when coming to get the ball for a throw in and he also asked the defence to slow it down with the quick goal kicks, seeming so he could catch a breather.

Smith is a level above Ayling, both on and off the pitch.

Ayling will go down as having the better career, but as of now, at the current stages of their career, Smith would be easily our first choice RB if he was fit, and it wouldn't even be a close contest.

If Smith didn't get that season ending injury, then Ayling wouldn't be here. Pretty simple really.

I'm don't really think there's much prospect of Ayling being here next season; he was brought in as a stopgap as Smith and Dijksteel were both injured.

It's possible he could be here in a Lee Peltier capacity I suppose, but that depends on money and his desire to play each week. He won't get that here.

Definitely need a first choice right back next summer. Recruitment have had at least a year to sort out this position. I don't know why they haven't been able to identify an up and coming young player. We could have done with someone this year to get up to speed. Along with a striker and good central mf, a position we have been lacking for a while.

Will smith return the same player, after a year injured and at 33(?) year old?

Most of the goals conceded come from our left side so it’s perhaps a better discussion on what to do with beefing up that side of the pitch. As far as Ayling goes he’s basically on his last part of his career. At 32 he can add a lot of experience and know how to the younger lads. As for Djksteel I think like many he’ll be gone in the summer.
