Mackem board in meltdown!!

By Sunderland standards yes, I wouldn't say they rank with our or many other clubs marquee signings and that's kind of my point, it's all relative and they are relatively unambitious over that period
Defoe is top premier league, England international striker. He without a doubt falls under marquee

Yes very lucky to have gone from the premier league to a bang average championship team that’s completely skint in five years, mainly due to his bad decisions.

Ignoring the comparative situation the clubs he's listed are in.
We're in dreamland compared to them.

Defoe was 33 when he signed for them, not what I'd call a 'marquee' signing (no more so than us signing John Wark was).

We signed Hasselbaink at 32 and I'm sure people would class that as marquee signing.

Defoe was also fantastic for them.

Fair point but Jimmy was a bigger name than Defoe (and a year younger) I'd say.

Agreed, I'd say if anything slightly below, both teams have been badly run but lets not forget Sunderland were one of the absolute giants of the game, They were top flight for the first 68 years until their first relegation, winning the league 6 times nobody had more championship than Sunderland at that time.

They're like two different clubs the first half was a giant of the game, the second half a giant joke.

Even in the modern era of foreign stars, I can't think of many players that I would have got excited about signing for us. They've had no Juninho's, Boksics, Vidukas, no players that a neutral can say, 'what a player, I'd pay to go watch him alone'. They haven't even had any Geremi, Ziege, Ricard level of players
They were giants of the game when Queen Victoria was on the throne, you can say the same thing about Blackburn and PNE,it's no longer the 19th century!

It goes back further than that too. We pretty much dominated them in meetings gong back to the early 1980s. In my 42 years of following Boro, we're well ahead in wins over them.

Not sure how we faired against them in the 1970's (before my time), but we had a really good team for most of that decade, I'd guess we bested them then too. Maybe @Erimus74 knows the score.

So it does: 31 victories to 14 defeats since the start of '63. As I said, I find it hard to care about matches before I discovered football, but if that doesn't make them our bunnies I don't know what does.

Off the top of my head,

Defoe
Phillips
Schwarz
Arca
Bent
Quinn
Sessegnon
Malbranque
Johnson

vs

Juninho
Ravanelli
Emerson
Festa
Viduka
Hasseilbank
Yakubu
Ince
Ziege
Southgate
Ehiogu
Merson
Schwarzer
Mendieta
Zenden
Boksic
Boateng
Woodgate
Branca

Not including homegrown talents, in my lifetime we’ve definitely had the more exciting and ambitious marquee transfers, even if it didn’t always work out. Most in that list would walk into any Sunderland side of the last 40 years. Can’t say that about too many going the other way.

facts is facts mate, we shouldn't be ashamed that we've been better than them.

They had 2 seasons 00-01 and 01-02 where they were a better side than us, other than that they have been whipping boys. You can claim in the league their highs equal our highs, fair enough. But over the period we are talking their lows are way below our lows with two appalling relegations from the prem 15 and 19 points, some near misses, and two relegations to the third tier, oh and now it's looking like 3 failed third tier promotion attempts.

In the cups, our highs are better than their highs with a win a uefa cup final and another bunch of finals and semis.

Two decent seasons 20 years ago doesn't really change that. Yes we are a mediocre prem, fairly good champ side, but the mackems would be on the up to reach those standards in the last 70 years.
Facts is facts, good to see you've used them 👍

It angers me that nobody seems to be giving Sunderland the credit they deserve.
They are the EFL trophy holders . Wrestling that coveted prize away from the mighty Salford.
For the last three seasons they have never finished outside the top 10 in a third class league.
A league that includes the legendary Accrington Stanley, Fleetwood Town, Crewe Alexandria, Shrewsbury Town, Rochdale. Rotherham, and Cheltenham.
I say well done Sunderland. Football needs plucky little clubs like this who punch well above their level.
Best of luck in the EFL trophy next season.

I expect Lincoln to score another victory at the Stadium of Rhyming Slang in the return leg, wrapping up a comprehensive aggregate win.
Sunderland will then progress to the final, because they got a bigger crowd.
