Maddo constantly criticising Engel

He was the defender marking Armstrong for the goal we conceded.

The reason fans don't seem to rate him is because the small number of negatives or mistakes are very obvious/easy to see (like marking Armstrong for the goal).

vs. the very large number of positives (based on actual stats) are the boring ones that nobody really notices in-game.
You want to minimise the mistakes he makes that cost us goals then that's up to you.

It's not just his defending. It's his sloppy play in possession.

The sheer quantity of sloppy moments he has. Mis controlling the ball, heading it straight up in the air, slicing clearances. He's a total calamity at times.

He can drive forward and knock a decent ball across but apart from that he's such a sloppy footballer.

Do you honestly believe Engel is at fault for that Southampton goal?

Ayling gets too easily beat by his man who crosses the ball in from the corner flag.
Clarke is in the total wrong position.
Dieng could have easily shouted and claimed the ball from the initial cross.
Howson (who must have claimed for it?) lets it deflect off him into the path of Armstrong...

... but it's Engel's fault for putting his hands behind his back and not diving into a tackle in the box?

Howson mainly at fault. Like I said in my initial post. Engel defending afterwards was crap. Stood right off him and just let him pick his spot. School boy stuff.

Dieng had no chance of taking that cross 🤣

That screen shot just proves how poor Engel's defending was to be honest.

Engel's positioning is perfect throughout the whole passage of play.

He's inline with his centre backs when there's no immediate danger, which is exactly where he's told to be.

He's also inline with Howson (his CB) in the previous screenshot which in your opinion... "proves how poor his defending is".

Unless you're expecting him to predict that our most experience player is going to completely miss kick a ball directly into the strikers path.... I don't know what more Engel could have done.

Maddo: Engel just did another bad one of those things there. He lost his man and then he found him again but he was inside him by then and then he wasn't inside him any more and there was almost one of those goal things.
Drury: Bit like you and Overmars, right? He gave you a torrid time didn't he, Neil?
Maddo: (turns off mic) That was f*cking YEARS ago! Who the f*ck do you think you are, pal? You don't even LOOK like a commentator! You look like you should be a f*cking COPPER! I'M the expert summarizer here. NOT you! Speak to me like that ONE more time and I'll ram this copy of the Da Vinci Code RIGHT up your @rse!
Drury: Erm . . . sports bras, Neil! Do you remember that time when your phone got nicked? Ha ha ha.
Maddo: (switches mic back on) I LOVE sports bras me! Do you remember that time when a seagull took a dump on your laptop? That was f*cking HILARIOUS!
Drury: We have a right laugh sometimes, don't we? Did that just go out for a corner there, Neil?
Maddo: Dunno, mate. My eyes are sh*te these days.
Drury: YEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!! What a FANTASTIC goal!!!!!!! That's Rotherham 1 Boro 0 !!!!!!!!!

I didn't see that match so I'm not going to comment on that match specifically but Whoscored and Sofascore are both purely statistic based ratings.

You could make 30 successful passes and 3 unsuccessful passes in really bad areas that could have cost us. The statistic based ratings will show a 91% pass completion rate and score that player well. Someone rating the player objectively will mark that player down significantly. Statistic based sites don't register things like poor positioning or failure to pressure an attacking player. Statistics are useful but aren't perfect.

Barlaser often scores well on statistic based sites but when watching him play you can see his failures that won't be picked up. Like his total inability to tackle or physically impose himself.
Precisely this, and succinctly put. ✔️

I've always found it incredibly odd how some people like to call up the radio after listening to somebody else watching it so they can give their opinion on the how people played. They didn't even see it. They're basing their whole opinion on what one person said to them through the radio speaker. It's absolutely bizarre

Still haven't seen a single piece of evidence to support engel is terrible narrative. There is umpteen stat sites to support that opinion, if it holds any water.

I think any honest assessment of Engel would be similar to Giles last season; better coming forward than defending.

He started the season terribly but has continued to improve game by game.

I'm still not sure why Thomas sometimes gets in ahead of him, but he seems a strong character and lesser players wouldn't have come through his early Sheffield Wed nightmare.

I still think players get past him too easily on occasions and he ain't the quickest, plus he can make a simple mistake, followed by a moment of brilliance and vice versa (the classic enigma characteristic!)

It's a position I don't see us needing to add too in the summer, unless either he or Bangura move on.

An assessment I would, by and large, agree with.
