Mass Gatherings wtf?

I'm not an expert on this piece of legislation, but I thought the government had agreed that its provisions would have to be agreed by Parliament every six months and expire after two years?
Billy, I am no expert either, but my understanding of the legislation is that it does not require re-raitification. If that is the case I have less problems with it.

What about the right to LIVE without getting coronavirus through mass gatherings like this? What about the rights of the police and NHS workers not to have to deal with the inevitable trouble and new infections which might come out if this, risking their own lives in the process?

I have no problem at all with my rights as a citizen of a democracy being temporarily suspended if it means that lives are saved and anyone who risks life unnecessarily with events like this deserves the (all too weak) punishment they will get.
Foggy what are you on about? I in no way condoned the gathering so take your rant elsewhere, I am not interested.

Very selfish individuals
What goes through these peoples heads, dont they realise what they were sat in the houses for, didn't it register that people were dying around them, how incentative can one be, because the PM said things have been relaxed a bit it doesn't mean that's the licence to have a full on BBQ, nights drinking session
I said right at the beginning of this horrific virus, people have to take responsibilities & they still have, more than ever

It does make me so angry, I worry about my daughter so much, read Billy & bears daily write ups & feel things are going in the right direction, then see this from, supposibly, intelligent adults

The mind boggles when trying to figure out what on earth drives these people to act so irresponsibly. It’s crazy.

Billy I just re-read the sunset clause and it is ambiguous. It says that the bill is enacted for 2 years and there is provision for automatic extension during transition. It also goes on to say it can be extended for another 2 years by a relevant national authority, i.e. the government. It doesn't explicitly state that parliament would have to agree to an extension beyond the 2+years, but it is implied.

EDIT - Just read a bit further for the definition of national authority and one of the definitions is a Minister of the Crown. The PM is a minister of the crown as are any other MP's appointed by the crown. So in effect no sunset clause.

Just learned that these are nationally co-ordinated events and one of the directors is the fascist Jayda Fransen, of Britain First infamy.

Anyone with friends being lured by the idea of attending would be well advised to inform them what kind of people they are getting involved with.

That is a great point Harry, and one that should be broadcast as widely as possible. People should know who they are getting into bed with.

One thing that does strike me as odd is that whilst I agree we should highlight the corona bill, and people absoloutely have a right to raise questions about lockdown, and the way it has been implemented. However, mass gatherings are not the way.

For clarity I am all in favour of lockdown, but would defend the rights of people to protest, albeit from their own homes. However, if the mass gathering is socially distanced, didn't Johnson bring this on himself with the ridiculous set of guidelines that probably allow the mass gathering providing:

Each group don't know each other
Each group is from the same household
Each group remains 2m apart

The first clause highlights how ridiculous the advice actually is.

Several states in the US that have had mass gatherings and/or anti-lockdown protests, are experiencing a surge in cases.

Here are a couple of examples:
Seventy-two individuals who tested positive for Covid-19 in Wisconsin recently attended a “large-gathering” before their diagnosis, according to a report.

According to The Progressive, the state's Department of Health Services (DHS) confirmed that they had gathered tracing data on a number of people who had contracted the virus.

Kentucky experienced its biggest daily increase in positive coronavirus cases, just two days after anti-lockdown protests. Protestors demonstrated last week over social distancing measures put in place by governor Andy Beshear, which closed all bars, restaurants and schools.

Mr Beshear announced on Monday that there were 293 new positive coronavirus cases in Kentucky on Sunday, bringing the state’s total to 2,960. This was the highest single day total in the state.

Yep. That’s enough of a reason not to go even if you passionately believe in the cause.

We all like to think that surely people just aren't that stupid but unfortunately even in one post of this there are plenty that lap this stuff up.

Yes, as Harry said these gatherings are being organised nationally by a right wing extremist group trying to dress themselves up as fighting for peoples liberties. They are a sinister group looking to grow in power and influence.

Sadly, the internet and social media has led to a ridiculous dumbing down of large numbers of society. It pains me to think how far it will go - previously, people with dumb ideas only had a few dumb friends to share it with. Now, the internet has given a platform to those people and while 99% of the people that post such stuff are just not very bright, there are a few people amongst them that spread this stuff intentionally for reasons known only to them.

Two reasons IMO

1) is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effect

2) is https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5900972/

Anyone can be guilty of either. Just had a guy on that post tell me he has 2 post doctorate degrees and worked at Nasa for 20+ years while I'm in a failed marriage, drunk every night and addicted to football so dont know what I am talking about. I looked at his website from his profile before he blocked me and he has been busking round Europe and doing Elvis impersonation gigs at Movieland. Not quite the expert he was making himself out to be. Nice attempt at I AM VEREY SMART though.

My understanding was the legislation was to be reviewed every six months. Therefore it'll stand unless the review says it should go. This is much more dangerous than making legislation that lasts for 6 months, then expires and has to be re ratified.

The problem with this country is there are too many experts and not enough people using their common sense. People demand rules like sulky 12 year olds. Given that transmission levels are still seriously high why would you risk going out any more than is necessary. This Government's biggest mistake is trusting the general population to act sensibly. A significant proportion aren't and won't.

It’s terrifying how so many are guided by these idiotic things, anyone that gets their news from Facebook is an idiot anyway.
