OFFICIAL Tour de France Thread 2022

Blimey, didn't know he was doing that. Don't know him, but raced against him at Junior level once or twice. He was a beast.

Yeah, he and I started cycling pretty much together, and used to race the track at Clairville together so maybe you beat me up one Wednesday night (I was / am bang average).

You're right he was always pretty special, his dad was a decent rider for Cleveland Wheelers and I remember going out with them both when I was about 13 - they absolutely hammered me just on a social ride, but also taught me about the importance of fuelling correctly using banana sandwiches.

I am the same, but for me I think its because he is just so dam good he is removing a little bit of the drama and spectacle.

That being said he is winning me round with his attacking flair, nice to see the Maillot Jaune choosing to attack when he could sit in the wheels.

Same with me, I don't think I've warmed to a TDF winner since Wiggins and before that it was probably 1998 and Pantani.

Did you ever go on a Cleveland Wheelers club run? If so, I may have met you, although I moved out of the area late 70s. Phil's dad was a regular when I was riding - really pleasant man - and his wife was riding too, but my memory may be playing tricks.

I was also in the bang average category. Always dreaded seeing Phil West's name on the TT start list as you knew you had no chance of winning the Junior prize.

It was 'fun' on the Tue / Thu chain gang (that used to meet near Marton) when Phil and or Chris Newton would turn up, and you knew it would be full throttle. Mostly resulting in me going out the back.

If I was on a CW club run in the late 70's I'd have had stabilisers (although I never actually needed them) and a bottle of milk - I wasn't born until 77 ;)
