Parking Charges to be introduced at Stewart Park 😡

You know it might be the years of Tory rule but it has never been good . My mates all joke that the people who work for the council are the people who can’t get proper jobs … I’ve defended that in the past but you know I’m starting to think they might be right … the lots of them couldn’t run a bath

As said it will cost money to put in meters, manage the meters and check the car which will probably take half the Cark Park fee

The Council will already collect rent from the ice cream vendor to pay for maintenance.

The park was donated to Middlesbrough residents in 1928? when 95% of residents probably didn't have cars and my guess is 90% of residents lived over 1 mile away. Ormesby and Marton were rural in 1928. There were no estates near the Park until the 1950s.

I would guess the park was not well visited until the end of the 1950s.

In WW1 it was an Army training camp for the Teesside Pals Battalion for 18 months.

I’d love to see their figures for justification… ie how much it will cost to implement and police vs actual projection of revenue

I bet there is not much profit in the first year at least

Same as guisborough walkway, charges have gone up, should be free to encourage people to get out and exercise.
The Guisborough Walkway one is appalling to charge for it. Most of the money collected probably goes into the Council's general funds. The only reason anyone would park there is to use the cafe and/or walkway.

There is no security, the Council probably collect rent from the Cafe. The Visitors Centre is run on donations e.g. Sirius Minerals Mine donated funds, the public space is run by volunteers and looked run down last Summer. Maybe Volunteers are also charged to use the car park. Or some people don't use it because there is a charge.

There are no public toilets for the Council to maintain. The area has really good potential for nature and rural studies as well as further fitness activities. It is surrounded by the Cleveland Hills/Roseberry Topping on one side and the former Guisborough to Nunthorpe railway on another side. There are old ironstone and jet mines on the hillside. There is a small lecture room and little outdoor lecture area, that never seem to be used.

Its £2.20 for 2 hours to park at the Walkway (7 days a week), but free in many parts of the centre of Guisborough for 2 hours, especially at a weekend. Crazy.

I am pretty sure the park was purchased from money bequeathed by Dorman Stewart but that Middlesbrough Council (Corporation) ended up having to match the sum to buy all the parklands and Marton Hall.

I remember a while back you saying that if the Dorman Long tower had came under Middlesbrough Council they would have done more to save it.

How do you feel about what they are doing to the park and talking of closing the Captain Cook Museum?

The residents parking zone will cover most of Marton Manor and Park End too
So £25 to park outside your own house for one car, £40 for any other cars - so a family with say three cars (husband, wife and teenage kid) will be charged £100+ to park on the street plus any visitors will also have to pay £40.
Can't wait until they try and enforce this
Could be a lot of front gardens getting dug up

Thanks Nobby - I will try it out sometime.

The Teesside area is so lucky to have a lot of free car parks.

Examples I am aware of : Kirkleatham Museums/Marske/Redcar beach road/Great Ayton/Stokesley/Guisborough Westgate/Flatts Lane/All the streets and roads in Saltburn.

All in R&C Council area.

If true it’s short sighted and desperate.

Still don’t know how developers got hold of Clairville Stadium!

They wouldnt get away with charging to park on the Common thats for sure. Theyve already lost the revenue from the circus' and fairs that opened on there, then moan when Albert Park is damaged when they drive their trucks onto it as that is the only alternative site to host events

When the stadium was sold/built on there was a deal done nothing would take place on the Common for 5 years ..

We are still waiting for the fair and circus to return
