promotion or win fa cup?

People should check back and ask themselves one question, what tier have we been in when we have actually had our best progression in cup competitions? Undoubtedly being in the top tier. Yes lower tier teams get to finals as we know, pragmatism over idealism for me as it is more likely to help achieve the ultimate aim.
Why be up there if it isn't to compete. This is our best chance every season of silverware. We've been to 4 cup finals, once as a second tier side.

FA Cup win would be better by a mile. Having said that, it ain’t happening. City, Liverpool, Chelsea still in? Even if we beat Spurs who are apparently playing their 1st team tonight.

I’d be quite happy if we played our reserve team tonight and got hammered, as long as we beat Luton.

Of course we are there to compete, i expect that every game we play. I am sure Hartlepool, QPR, Maidstone and Peterborough were all there to compete in this seasons F.A. Cup.

Realistically, the higher the league you can compete and hold your own in, the better the chances of improving your squad giving you improved chances of success in a competition where every team competes, and doing so more often. It is no surprise that generally, our likelihood of success (frequency of opportunity) has generally been when in the top tier, common sense tells us that is the case more often than not. Sustained success is the aim of every club, not just the top 6 PL teams

To be a team that drifts between the bottom 6, 7 teams, of the PL, if we dont get relegated thats it, or to be a championship team that won the FAC, only one for me
I appreciate the point and as much as I love the Championship over what the first few years would be like in the Premier League, but if we could sustain our presence like say Leicester, who have proven it can be done (winning both league and cup). Compare our journeys since our League Cup Final, although I accept they are the exception not the rule though and to achieve it would be a struggle. I guess I have my pragmatic head on today though.

Always separates the accountants from the fans this question.

Cup.

If we go up another season of being humiliated every week in the hope of finishing 17th. Be still my beating heart...

That would be great, I loved seeing Leicester winning the league & later FAC & if it all ends tomorrow for them the club & fans have had an amazing journey

Gibson can't afford that, we're not where we were as a club 20 years ago. The foreign wealth coming into the game has seen to that.

Ah the old “you are not a proper fan then” jibe, it is sadly a common go too phrase of the visionless supporter to try to claim the higher ground in such a debate, it always makes me chuckle.

No, this is the "soulless automaton" jibe :D

I mean I can't be bothered with your if we do this and then do that and then we might do a Leicester nonsense. Just give me sporting glory.

You say that, and to a degree thats probably true, but if you think Gibson doesn’t want to try then what is the point in trying to win promotion in the first place. Most people on this thread are picking an idealistic dream that is near impossible for the reasons you say above. The best way to actually achieve it is to build and improve bit by bit. That in itself is a struggle, many a team fall by the wayside trying, as we ourselves well know. However, I bet if you talked to Delia Smith, Evangelos Marinakis, Maxim Demim or Denise Coates they’d all take being in the Premier league in 2022/23 than winning this years cup and being in the Championship next year. I am sure Smith and Coates anyway are long standing fans of their clubs too.

I have told you how best to achieve what you crave, nobody will give you sporting glory without the building for it. Lady Luck rarely visits clubs in the modern era 6 matches in a row, sporting glory is earned not given.

You seem to have misunderstood the OP's question.

It was "would you prefer winning promotion or winning the FA Cup?", not would you prefer the chance of promotion or the chance of the FA Cup.

There's no need to build for sporting glory in the question, it's either get it now or get the finances from promotion.

I still think you're missing the point of the original question.
If you were given the choice - right now - to win the FA Cup this season or to get promotion this season, why would you choose promotion?
You have stated that the aim of promotion is to have a better chance of winning the cup that you would turn down in order to choose promotion so that you would have a better chance of winning the cup you have just rejected.

Your argument stacks up if you were asked if you would choose 3 points against Luton or victory tonight. But that isn't the question.
