The horrible Joey Barton at it...

He’s off his head isn’t he?

Rio Ferdinand has played at the very highest level and very rarely has anything insightful or interesting to say. Same goes for Owen. Or Danny F***ing Murphy. It doesn’t equate. Just let people enjoy the game.

It’s all coming across a bit forced, he’s obviously using this to promote his new podcast. Going down the Le Tissier route of grifting.

He's an absolute idiot. His argument is contradictory and confused. He talks about experienced male presenters who haven't played at any level but who have worked their way up, and that is seemingly ok. Does he have a problem with say, I dunno, Gabby Logan (someone at the top of their game and who has clearly worked to get where she is) presenting a football match?

He's clearly going down the Laurence Fox route. Best ignored.

Or as TheYorkshireTerrier pointed out the le tiss route. However, I do think there is something a bit different with Le tiss in that he actually believes what he's saying - a bit of a crank, an old school flat earther. Whereas a lot of this Tufton Street grift is they will just opine what they get paid to say, which is a very anti "woke" agenda and is probably the space Barton is occupying with this sort of stuff.

Usually I turn the sound off if it’s not Maddo commentating lol 😆 Seriously though all of today’s commentators seem to think too hard and/or say too much, maybe because they are paid by the word?

As for women commentators personally I’d like to hear a thick yorkie accent or maybe even jawdee as most of the women (commentators) have some sort of London accent which is a bit of a grind to listen to for 2 hours.

Lastly, if Andy Townsend is commentating I’m also going to listen to music while watching— perhaps with a nice cold one 🍺

I completely agree with the point he was trying to make, maybe not so much the way he did it . I very much doubt I'm in the minority who also believe that you should be hired on you're knowledge/ability to do the job and not picked just to meet a woke quota to tick a box. There are some fantastic women working in the game such as Laura Woods however there is also quite clearly people who are chosen just to meet the agenda.
Yes. People like Clinton Morrison, Trevor Sinclair, Martin Keown, Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Savage, Michael Owen, Andy Hinchcliffe… all absolutely terrible pundits who offer absolutely nothing to televised football whatsoever. They just happened to be good footballers, which is very different from being able to provide insight into live football matches.

There are far, far more bad male pundits getting work than there are female.

“Woke quota” FFS. Jesus wept.

I thought the female commentator on Everton vs Newcastle was good, think her name was Lucy.

There are some women in football media who are very good - Laura Woods, Bianca Westwood, Emma Hayes. I think Alex Scott is ok in her role. I have no issue with female anchors and commentators.

What I take exception to is when they conflate the men’s and women’s games. They’ll be covering a men’s FA cup draw or game and they’ll be like “and here is someone who knows a thing or two about winning this competition…Eni Aluko.” She knows absolutely nothing about winning the men’s FA cup, it’s a totally different standard.

You can criticise the male pundits like Sherwood, Merson and Owen all you want but as soon as you criticise the female ones you’re labelled sexist, misogynistic or a racist.

I don’t mind pundits like Karen Carney but what do they seriously add to coverage of Premier League or Champions League? You don’t get the likes of Clinton Morrison, Peter Beagrie or Andy Hinchcliffe covering UCL games on English tv as they wouldn’t be taken seriously, they’ve not played at that level. Yet they’ll elevate females from the woman’s game which is below league two standard.
Lucy Ward. A youth team coach at Leeds United I think, or at least she was. Also married to Neil Redfearn.

And they promote some women because they’re trying to grow the women’s game. We used to have Ron Atkinson commentating on Champions League on terrestrial TV, we have Dion Dublin doing World Cups. What do either of those two know about winning tournaments of that magnitude?

Just take a step back and ask ‘what is it that I’m actually upset about here?’ It’s just people talking about football. It’s really not that deep.

I've aired my views on male pundits many times on here, rarely give them the time of day as it's really "lowest common denominator" stuff.

Rarely watch that much elite UK football these days but whenever I do Emma Hayes comes across really well. She actually tries to provide insight behind set up, tactics etc rather than the usual cliched platitudes ("he should be scoring from there"... etc)

Barton's point is that he thinks it's impossible for women to commentate successfully on men's games, due to the fact they are women. Which is a sickening position to take.

Has anyone asked him about BLM or is that the subject of his next podcast?

To those who think it is box ticking who specifically do they think is not worthy of a slot on TV?

In my experience the female pundits are miles better than the male ex-players as they realise the scrutiny they will be under and actually do some research and know what they talking about. A lot of the male ex-players just turn up. It's irrelevant at what level they have played unless all you are interested in is amusing anecdotes.

TBH when viewing Prime games this week switching the audio to Stadium FX was my go to choice & almost always mute any & all half time 'expert' insight & discussion regardless.

Too many pundits can't even give accurate commentary whilst watching replays, never mind live play.

I agree about Emma Hayes being far more analytical than most (all?) other pundits, male and female.

When I watch and listen to cricket and rugby pundits and co-comms I often think they are giving so much more insight than their football equivalents provide.

It is not a gender thing, it's ultimately an intelligence and communication thing. Some ex pros are good at analysis, some are not.

Joey Barton is a peice of scum who is howling at the moon and to a few loons in his echo chamber, the world is moving on and leaving him behind thankfully.

He’s gone full Laurence Fox by the looks of it. There’s a lucrative career to be had in saying bigoted, offensive sh*t for money. The issue is that people are given airtime and we have to discuss what they’ve said as if it’s a serious point being made.

Barton is a massive, massive c*nt and always has been. That he lasted so long in football and got so many deals at so many clubs and went on to manage two of them, it doesn’t speak well of the game at all. And if having a female footballer on a punditry panel means Barton misses out then I’m all for it. He’s a violent, lying, bigoted sack of sh*t who should’ve been sent on his way ages ago.

Very good point. Might be a huge over simplification but I've always thought the fact most cricketers/rugby players have a much higher level of education than the average footballer is probably at the heart of it.

In order to hold an audience you actually need a certain level of intelligence, something lacking in most ex pros (or certainly the ones selected as pundits/commentators).

Previously Barton's c*ntishness had a vague deniability. He's now gone to some lengths to remove any shadow of doubt. Women, non-whites, foreigners - they can all f*ck off. He has reserved the entire table in C*nts' Corner with that tweet.

Might be worth setting a timer to see how long it is before he claims he has been hacked.

The big positive in all this is that it is moving him away from mainstream life of all types. Great. If I hear his name again it will be too soon
