* The Unofficial "Official" Boro v Bristol City Match-Day Thread *

Just sh
Our defence is picked for our attacking play and defensively are being found out. They have played on that fine line of success and failure since Carrick came in, they have lost that fraction of concentration/confidence and we've been royally punished for it.

We are not alone in that, but that rub of the green just hasn't gone our way either, unlike say, Sheffield United who have had huge slices of luck recently that have gained them at least 8 points.
I agree its a fineline but its not the rub of the green which has changed McNair playing instead of fry and ramsey playing add to that a dip in Hackneys form and we are much weaker defensively . Hopefully fry will be fit soon. The balance is completely wrong in the team at the moment. To finish on a positve great fighting spirit today we just need to be a much tighter defensive unit.

I'm worried by Carrick's answer to Drury on how Fry is. I think this might be him for the season.
Why doesn’t drury just ask the next question and say, what’s the injury, calf, hamstring, groin. Knee and just get a bit more knowledge for the listening boro fans.
So frustrating!

Watched the game with a Burnley and Liverpool fan and they were impressed with how we passed and attacked

Just to pick up on the lack of a leader.
When fry was in the team we were purring about smith and lenihan as they were touted as excellent leaders.
Since McNair has been consistently in the team (and this is subtle) I think players like smith and lenihan use up more mental energy playing with a McNair rather than a fry who they can fully trust and relax and concentrate fully on their own game when fry is there and allow their leadership qualities to come out so much more whereas alongside McNair they are unconsciously more nervous (if that’s the correct word)
Does anyone get what I’m saying ??

Nail on the head I think mate. Since Fry has gone all of our defence looks very nervous.

The league table does not lie.
We are in a strong position for the play offs by right.
The character shown in the second half shows why.
We had just lost two games in a row and we were 2-0 behind away from home.
Did we fold and give up on a lost cause.
No.
Proud to see my team fight back for a point today.
Things are not going well in terms of results but the character is spot on.
So I am optimistic they will turn it round.

Yes. When I used to play, the hardest defenders I faced were those who never crossed the halfway line - they lived to defend, to stop me, or whoever the centre-forward was. McNair is not a born defender, he doesn't have that mentality. Fry does.
In a modern football team that plays from the back of course it's complicated, but away from home, on a dip in form, you miss those defenders who will die to get a clean sheet.
