Violent conduct

Kudos to the linesman for spotting this and raising it with the ref. As the ref didn't see any of it the linesmen would have to convey also the intention/mood of it. It was aggressive, and also he followed it up when Riley turned back with a "wot you gonna do " aggressive stance. So yeah Mr John Buckley , he of 15 yellow cards last season, thanks for helping out the Boro ( although our second goal didn't need them to have 1 less player at all ) take a seat for 3 games and listen to some tunes , I suggest "Oh what a lonely boy" by Andrew Gold

"A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)"

That would cover it even if you disagree with the definition of violent conduct.

Deliberately throwing a ball in another player's face is definitely an abusive action.
It wasn’t in his face, it was practically tapped on the back of his head.
One of the worst decisions I have seen in a long time, but payback for the numerous things Blackburn got away with against us over the years

Don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but McGree gives him a little 'nudge' with his elbow as he walks past and that's what prompts him to throw the ball. You could say 'well done' to McGree if you had such a mind. 🤭

Don't think it was a red, as surely it can't be classed as using excessive force to hurt an opponent.

I can remember Roy Keane doing it to Shearer, which resulted in the two of them squaring up to eachother and Keane ended up getting sent off for trying to hit Shearer in the face. He wasn't even given a yellow card for bouncing the ball off of Shearer's head though.

At the same time, it was still a petulant and silly thing to do though, so I have no real sympathy for the lad.

As mentioned previously, any force is excessive when it comes to deliberately throwing a ball at somebody's head.

A ref getting it wrong in the past doesn't mean it shouldn't be punished.
