Violent conduct

What’s his nose made of? Bone china?
Hit in the right spot then it takes nothing to bust your nose and also break it.
If they only punish outright excessive force then we’re in a bad place….about time refs start to use their power to crack down on the smaller things because untouched they lead to bigger incidents
Can we at least agree on that ?

Oh I oh agree it was a red, I’ve said so twice on this thread 👍

So, good question. On the itv football highlights show they spotted why and showed it in slow motion.
Mcgree walked past Buckley and cheekily gave him a little elbow in the back.
Buckley feels it and reacted …. Var might of given Mcgree a yellow card for his part but still a red for Buckley
I think if Buckley reacts to McGree ‘bumping’ into him like that by throwing the ball at the back of McGree’s head then he needs some sort of anger training, it was a complete overreaction. I know things go on all the time in football matches but the ball was long dead after Blackburn had been awarded a free kick.

I’m not sure why ‘chucking something at someone’s head’ is being excused/played down by anyone, TBH.
Yes if you threw a ball at somebody’s head in a pub or in the street I think depending on the person you would find the police might get involved.

The laws say that making deliberate contact with an opponent's head or face with the hand or arm, when not challenging for the ball, is to be considered violent conduct (which carries a red card) unless the force used is negligible.

There's also a principle that has been expressed in previous IFAB communications that when a ball (or other object) is thrown, it is considered as an extension of the player's arm.

Given those two factors, I reckon the red card was a justifiable decision by the referee.

Looked fairly trivial to me.

I'm relieved McGree didn't roll around holding his head; no one can accuse him of getting Buckley sent off.

Still, Buckley has to bear the responsibility: no one made him do it, and he's given the ref an excuse to send him off.

I mean, Emi Martinez would have been sent off about 7 times during the WCF penalty shootout alone.

If they actually policed this stuff, along with the foul and abusive language law, you’d have 10 players off before half time. Can see the purpose of the rule but it’s a bit daft really.
It'd be nice if players learned to stop acting like petulant little dicks and adult the hell up once in a while. Then these laws wouldn't need applying

Probably - but would you agree that the force used was not negligible?

If so, then based on the intent of the law regarding "off the ball" deliberate contact to the face or head, the referee was well within his rights to issue a red card.

Let me put it this way - if this were a game with VAR, I don't think it would have been sent for an on field review as a clear and obvious error.

Looks like Blackburn didn't even appeal the decision, they only appealed the length of the ban. So even they haven't disagreed with the decision.

Rediculous really from the player to get himself sent off for no reason when his own side have just won a free kick. It wasn't even as though a big fight or any provocation had took place either. Just a really, really stupid decision from the player.

That was stupid then. For any straight red card for violent conduct, 3 matches is the minimum.

It can be made longer, but not shorter.

The only way to reduce the ban would have been to contest the decision itself.

I think what Buckley did was silly and petulant but would be technically construed as common assault, whether injury was caused or not.
