Violent conduct

Petulant from the Rovers player. I think he got a bit miffed when Mcgree brushed past him (knocking his shoulder slightly) and then threw the ball lightly onto Mcgree’s head. Didn’t think it warranted a red, but I guess that is the rule. Stupid decision by him cost his team the chance of three points.

That's what I was wondering. It was Crooks that had committed the original foul for that break in play. What had poor old McGree done?
He nudged into him as he walked past him. Rovers fans and the commentators think he did it to wind Buckley up, but surely if he had, he'd have made more of a meal of the ball being thrown at him and he didn't really react at all. So... I don't know. Harsh red, but professional players should know not to do something that gives the officials a decision to make.

Buckley is getting pelters on the Blackburn forum for being petulant and unprofessional although none of them feel it was worthy of a straight red.

Certain red, and the player should be fined as it's a totally unnecessary one in a period where Blackburn were just given the advantage.

It's soft as *****, but you throw a ball in another player's face and you deserve to be sent off.
It's harsh on Blackburn, but the player brought it on them.

Totally stupid. He have given the officials a decision to make. I'd be fuming if one of ours had been daft enough to do that.

I grant you in the grand scheme of things is nothing. I'd rather see players sent off for diving / faking injury. A ball in the back of the head is frankly nothing.

Yet he's been daft by doing it. I wouid be blaming our player and not the official if one of ours has been sent off for the same offence.

Does it matter how hard you throw the ball at someone's head?

VIOLENT CONDUCT

Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.
re the FA reasons for Violent Conduct which means a red,,,

Key word is excessive or brutality ... I dont think throwing a ball from 2 foot in the back of someones head ( not debating the hardness of the throw ) is either....

not excessive as the law dictates it must be

"A player, substitute or substituted player who commits any of the following offences is sent off:
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)"

That would cover it even if you disagree with the definition of violent conduct.

Deliberately throwing a ball in another player's face is definitely an abusive action.
