Warnock was holding us back

Bolasie was brought in with a view to playing him as a striker, if we were going to make the playoffs we needed that extra bit of zing.. but we didn’t really have the money to make that happen, they didn’t take really get up to speed and we dropped points (no back up for Fry or Tavernier either) still a respectable finish given where we were the season before. Equal to the Mowbray/Karanka season with more players moving on/bigger rebuild.

Far to many fans underestimating the job that Warnock did here. Much better than Monk, Pulis, Woodgate. Very similar to Mowbray and his record was comparable with Karanka’s.

I do like Chris Wilder’s brand of football.. but Warnock built the squad that allows him to play like that for absolute buttons.

Lumley - picked up for nowt, still young

Dijksteel - thrown on the scrap heap by woodgate
Fry - was going backwards under woodgate
McNair - premierleage defender, championship midfielder

Jones - gave him his debut and managed expectations
Crooks - an absolute steal!
Howson - how many fans
Tavernier - did a fantastic job
Bola - thrown on the scrap heap by woodgate

Sporar - recommended by bolasie
Watmore - thrown on the scrap heap by sunderland (fools)

Sol Bamba - magnificen! saw a bit of Sol Bamba‘s body positioning and control in Dijksteel. fantastic addition to the squad and coaching set up.

The set up for the romantic Hollywood finish was there but it wasn’t to be, Warnock played his part but now Chris Wilder takes the leading role.

Great to see us getting managerial appointments right after having such a long run of absolute duffers. Onwards and upwards UTB!
Warnock’s record is comparable to Karanka’s? Did I read that right?

I disagree, not every manager comes in and gets a reaction from the players. Warnock is renowned for his man management skills. He was the right man and the right time in terms of keeping us up.
Well it certainly worked, we can't argue that fact. I disagree that Warnock worked some kind of miracle and I still think any experienced manager would have done the same.

I don't like Warnock, but I don't really want to bash him either, that would just be a bit mean.

We had won 1 game in the previous 12 before that, in isolation we should have won the games we won and probably more but that's the whole point, we were playing like a team accepting relegation without a fight.
I'm not arguing that we wouldn't have gone down with Woodgate. I'm saying that Warnock's achievement wasn't miraculous.

See if pulis had come in at the same time as Warnock there is no doubt in my mind we would have went down

Newy can't let it go, Warnock did ok for about 6 months then fell off a cliff and rightly got sacked.
Saved us from relegation, had us finishing 10th the season after then left us with a squad capable of a top six finish.

A few on here seem to honk that ANY manager could have done the job he did, saving us from relegation.. then I’m guessing having us challenge for the top six. Tony Pulis couldn’t do it and he had much more talent at his disposal.

I like Chris Wilder and like the football he has us playing, but I’m not going to let folks away with saying Warnock was a clueless divvy who was dragging the club down when it simply wasn’t the case.

As much as I want our team to play classy football just the same I want our fans to be cool as well. It was the same with Mowbray a few of our fans got a bit over excited and slagged him off something rotten.. it wasn’t until years after they could see what a good job he had actually done.

Warnock like Mowbray has built the core of what will be a successful squad and he did it in very difficult circumstances for next to nothing.

Warnock DID build this squad then? Because I’ve read quite a lot on here about how the club signed players he didn’t want and wouldn’t sign the players he did.
How many players did we miss out on? Interesting how we don’t see folks having a pop at Wilder fir starting Howson, Crooks & Tavernier over Payero. You wouldn’t have heard the end of it under Warnock.. even if he was injured!

If we missed out on them then… how does that affect the squad as it stands now? You said Warnock built it. That point would stand regardless of whether he got Robbie Brady or the Welsh striker or whoever else he talked about in the press, surely?

Finishing 10th doesn't take into account the poor second half of the season which continued into the first third of this season.
Leaving a squad capable of top 6 place finish in 14th place shows he was under-achieving with that squad.
He had no trust in the squad. He insisted on using them in a basic man-man marking system which they clearly weren't able to maintain for 90 mins.
And don't give me injuries. Every team, every manager has injuries to deal with.
