What needs to happen over the summer then?

I feel we should be looking to spend the majority of the budget on signing 4 or 5 quality players, who we feel will be good enough for the first-team.

Signing a RB, LB, DM, AM and ST will be imperative.

Keep most of the players, so that we have a large squad which just needs a bit of quality adding to it. Engel, Barlaser and Azaz aren't good enough for the first-team but they're okay squad players.

Are we in need of a big overhaul, or do you have faith in the lads we have now?
Incrementally build, and sign 1 or 2 players to ensure our attacking capability is enhanced. Build-up play is fantastic but without end product we'll continue to only see slow and steady progress. Enough there for us to take the next step with those improvements and another year's development in the current squad. Definitely need a long term right back too.

Brynn and Hemings return - Dieng , Glover , Jones to leave .
RB Brook Norton Cuffy , K K Hayden / Danny McNamara
LB Max Lowe Sam McCallum, RN Davies. Sam Byram , Charlie Taylor .
CH Ladislav Krejci / Nathan Wood /Michal Helik, Jake Cooper
CM Alan Browne Captain / Alex Mowatt/ Adrian Sut, John Lundstram
AM Callum Ohare / Ilias Chair / Sorba Thomas / Pavel Sulc / Harvey Knibbs
RW Danny Armstrong / Finn Azeez
CF Jay Stansfield / Matheus Saldanha / Mojmir Chytil / Andre Gudjohnsen /Theo Bair / Sam Gallagher

The main thing that needs to happen is we don't cash in on any of our better players. Can't build a team if we have to keep finding replacements and hoping they turn out better than what we had.

McGree should be the only one we sell (if he won't extend his contract).

Other than that, we need some experience up front and some steel to the midfield.

Big overhaul.

2 x RB (assuming Ayling and Dijksteel off. I’d be off if I was Anfernee)
1 x first choice LB reqd. ( Keep Bangura. Sadly I don’t think Engel working out)
CM x 2. Need Barlaser and O Brien replacements
LAM assuming Greenwood goes.
Striker x 1.

GK Dieng / Glover

RB ? / ?
LB ? / Bangura or Engel
CB. RVDB / FRY/ CLARKE / PADDY
CM. Howson / Hackney / ? / ?
RAM Forss / Jones
CAM Azaz / ?
LAM McGree / ?
CF Lath / ? / Coburn

Assumes Ayling, Thomas, O’Brien, Greenwood all go back to parent clubs,
Dijksteel leaves (I would if I was him, clearly not fancied, which is a shame)
McGree stays
Paddy signs new contract
Engel or Bangura moved out
Hackney stays.
Barlaser moved on

Quite a big rebuild… even bigger if big money comes for Hackney and RVDB.

Edit :
forgot about Lenihan and Smith. I like both of them although Smith not getting any younger.

Lock Morgan Whittaker in a room and not let him out until he's promised to be our forward for the next 5 years,he'll be expensive for sure but we've brought a lot of money in for Rogers and Chuba in the past year, him, latte and a fit and firing josh coburn and I'd be happy with that 3 up top

RB Brook Norton Cuffy / Danny McNamara
CH Ladislav Krejci / Michal Helik

AM Callum Ohare / Ilias Chair / Sorba Thomas / Harvey Knibbs

I see a lot of Theo Bair, not sure he’s championship standard though

RB LB 2 midfielders 2 forwards - that is minimum. If we lose Hackney McGree Van Den Berg then obviously it will be even more required

Posted this t'other week....

I think if we want to have a 'real go' utilising the 'war chest', then we need first team starters in these positions.

First XI
-----------------------Dieng-----------------------

Signing------Lenihan---------VDB------Signing

-----------Hackney-----------Signing------------

---Jones-------------Signing-----------McGree--

------------------------Signing---------------------

Second XI / rotation options

-----------------------Glover-----------------------

Smith---------Signing---------Clarke------Engel

-----------------Signing-----Barlaser------------

----Forss-------------Azaz------Bangura/Silvera--

--------------------Coburn/Lath--------------------

To leave:
Greenwood (although for £1.5 million I might be tempted)
O'Brien (not seen enough to say he's worth a decent fee and chunk of our wage budget)
Ayling (looked okay at RWB, mainly poor at RB)
Thomas (expected way more, looks lost)
Dijksteel (never fancied, often injured)
Fry (never does enough for me, got all the attributes, doesn't seem to have the ruthlessness or desire, misses a month or more most seasons it seems, a new challenge as a more orthodox champo CB might see him flourish)
McNair (probably too much wage, never 100% cemented a place, if we stick with three CB worth keeping IMO)
Howson (Contentious for some I'm sureI But too old to be counted on, he's not getting any better, poor captain, not athletic or physically imposing enough in a lot of games, maybe keep him if on buttons as a rotation option)
Gilbert (waste of money / squad place)
Hoppe (waste of money / squad place)
Bilongo (can't see him making it at our level)

I suppose there's a decent chance that Rav, Hackney and McGree could leave, which would mean a full on rebuild regardless of what we planned initially.

I should emphasise that this is with a 'going for it' season in mind, if we want a strong push for upper play-offs, outside chance of autos type scenario.

If we want similar to this season, like an about 8th and maybe sneak the play offs scenario with a bit of luck on form and injuries, probably a much less drastic overhaul would be needed.

I also feel there's a bit of a malaise mentally around the squad when we're not steam rolling teams.

We seem to lack fight, belief, aggression, niggle and a bit of shîthousêry. We lack leaders and a vocal organiser. It is primarily for that reason I would try and move on from Howson, Fry (and McNair too), they've been here a long time and been pretty much ever presents in squads that have failed to deliver.

A fresh start with a few more experienced, champo toughened campaigners at fullback and defensive centre mid would transform us I feel (as long as they're of sufficient quality and athleticism to implement Carrick's favoured formation and style of play obviously).

The finishing touch would be an affordable version of Archer and Akpom (or who knows, the real deal!) to not only carry much more goal threat, but crucially hold up the ball and occupy defenders, creating time and space to allow us to play how we want to at the back.

Dig deep Gibbo!
