What needs to happen over the summer then?

1) LW / lwb with pace ... Basically a Jones / Adomah on the left .. that with Engel and Bangura would free up Jones and Forss attentions from the opposition

2) a CF that can hold the ball up .. ELL can't do that , and all teams that go up have that. Coburn can , but unfortunately injuries mean we need a third opinion.

3) a DCM enforcer and physical presence.. enhance our set pieces and protect hackney/ O'Brien going forward.

Add those in, and we've 3 5 2 / 4 2 3 1 options

A right back with pace and power,
physical holding midfielder,
A forward who can play a number 10 roll. (Can Carrick develop him like he did with Chuba)
A left winger, midfielder.

O’Brien isn’t the answer to any question we have in midfield, he’s arguably worse than barlaser who is no where near what we need.

Whatever he did 2-3 years ago for Huddersfield he’s shown none of it for us.
Weirdly I was thinking that tonight...he seemed a bit headless chicken like...rushing round achieving very little
Oh for a Trevor Putney ....Dean glover ....

Get all players fit - 1

Keep the better younger players and get them under long contracts - Hackney, LL, Jones, VDB, Dieng, McGree - 2

Give Howson and Ayling - 1 year contracts - 3

Sign/loan forwards to replace Rogers and Crooks - I would aim to have at least 6 forwards on the books - LL, Coburn, Forss, Silvera at present? - 4

Loan/Sign O'Brien if low fee - 5

Trim some of the squad if players are fit - 6 (Coulson, Roberts, Dijksteel/Smith, Fry/McNair)

Bring at least one of the younger goalies into the Squad to replace JJones/Glover - 7

Try for Sorba Thomas as replacement for Greenwood. - finance may be an issue as I expect our budget to be around £4m and it would mean a sale for us. Maybe Dieng if rumours are right of £4m bids for him.

If Peterborough don't get promoted - I'd go all out and make Harrison Burrows my number one target of the summer - £4 million and double whatever wages he's on.

22 year old left back - captain - 12 goals and 15 assists this season. Easily the best player in league one in my opinion.

I'd also sign Cody Dramah - He'll be available on a free transfer when his contract runs out at Leeds - Valued at £2m, he was "okay" at Luton last season but hasn't been great at Birmingham.
Needs to stop moving around on loan - somewhere he can call his new long term home and be more consistent.

I think that would sort our back 5 out for the season, along with signing Luke Ayling.

Dieng/Glover
Ayling/Smith/Dramah
RVDB/Fry
Clarke/Lenihan
Burrows/Engel/Bangura

That would give us three right backs…Tommy Smith, Ayling and Drameh. We don’t really have the budget for that kind of depth.

Drameh would be a free transfer on relatively low wages, and I'd sell Dijksteel so we'd be one in one out.

I think with Smith and Ayling - two of the most experienced right backs in the league - we'd benefit from having a young right back to learn from them.

I'm with you on youth Ash .
Drameh , or Danny McNamara on a free , or Norton Cuffy Kesler Hayden on loan to buy and either Smith if fit OR Ayling , not both .Ayling would be an expensive sub , so Smith as back up to the younger lad . BN Cuffy with McNamara as back up would do me.

Plus i think ayling would comfortable as an emergency centreback or right of a 3 asuming McNair leaves

Agreed. We already have Smith on the books. Doesn’t make sense to bring in Ayling and then and another right back. You either bring in Ayling or Drameh alongside Smith.

what if we are skint , and no money is available ? We sell Dieng and Glover ,Dijksteel, AND Mcgree and Forss , Paddy goes , the 4 loans go back .
Brynn and Hemming GK, Mathew Ryan Loris Karius free
Cody Drameh or Danny McNamara LB free
Jake Cooper , Yerry Mina CH free
Max Lowe , RN Davies , Charlie Taylor , Sam Byram , Sam McCallum RB free
Alan Browne , Alex Mowatt ,CM free
Callum Ohare , LW free
Tyrese Dolan AM free
Finn Azeez RW free
Sam Gallagher , Ollie Mcburnie CF free

Would that suffice to get us up next year ? I think it would, good mix of quality and experience.

We don’t even know if smith:

A - will be fit at the start of next season

B - will physically be able to return to his previous level of form and forness

C - having such a serious injury at that age, is able to continue his career at all

I guess the club have to plan for an all those possibilities.

We aren’t that skint….but yes there are some decent frees available

I want to see a couple of young central midfielders. Ideally with pace/strength and ability to play simple passes well.

I think Bangura/Engel with a full pre-season will be good enough.

I would like a new right back - think Ayling has been a good stop gap, but would only bring him in of he was willing to be a cheap back up that is good for the dressing room.

An attacking player that can play 10/false nine striker (Like Rogers...). Expecting them to start as back up and challenge Azaz, Lath, Coburn.

I'd be happy starting the season

Dieng
New Rb
VDB
Clark/Fry/Lenihan
Engel
Hackney
New CDM
McGree
Azaz
Jones
Lath

(I'd actually like to see us start McGree as 10 and Forss off the left, but don't think Carrick will try that)

Mostly look for development from within the players we have aim to slowly introduce some young players we bring in.

I think we need more goal threats on the pitch. Not having Forss is a massive reduction in goals in the side, if we don’t play Forss we need a cm that scores of a new LW that can get double figures

Yeah - we need goals from the 3 behind the striker.

McGree was scoring at a good rate earlier in the season, Azaz has 10 in 42 games over the two teams, but I think if you are playing the formation we are you need 30-45 goals from those positions.

Even if he's not fit enough to play - he's got a year left on his contract regardless and he's the type of character (like Ayling) who you want in and around the dressing room.
It could be great for a young up and coming RB to learn from two of the most experienced in that position in the division.

Hackney has came out and said the impact Howson has had on him. We could do more of the same.
