What needs to happen over the summer then?

Just watching the Blackburn v Ipswich match made it obvious. Latte Lath is looking more like it now he’s had a run, but a forward like Szmodics, Whittaker or Kieffer Moore is what we still lack. A proper physical target man, and a finisher, preferably one of each.

Szmodics and Whittaker aren't forwards or target men, I wouldn't say, they're attacking midfielders/wingers.

We need them too, to be fair.

We've loads of pace, just can't get it on the pitch together. We need quality on the ball and a finisher. Latte should of scored his 1 on 1 earlier in the game.
Do we? We have Latte Lath, Bangura, Silvera, and Jones. That's nowhere near enough, nor really good enough. We've been over-reliant on Jones to the point that most of our attacks were going through him and then we had basically no threat on the break, and no directness without him once he got injured. There's no balance there and we have no proper left winger of either sufficient quality or pace.

I think we are not far off another 'rebuild'. It seems to be every season.

Plenty of loan signings leaving. The likes of Mcgree / Forss / Jones and Clarke entering final year. So it's a case of sign them on or move. It would be a loss to loss to lose all 4. Mcnair almost nailed on to leave.

Hackney will be wanted. That and O'Brien leaving. That leaves Howson (maybe) and Barlaser as CMs. I don't think Barlaser is even good enough. Squad member at best.

The bonus is that the players we signed last summer are a year more experienced. They will benefit from that. We will have some longterm injuries back.

I've heard online that Mcgree and Forss want out? Clearly nothing official. Yet we'd do well to replace either with 'as good' or better. I'd be more concerned about losing Forss than Mcgree.

I think it's another big summer ahead. A RB / 2 x CMs and a forward would appear priority. The one good thing is that we finally have a decent No1 goalkeeper. . We don't have to worry about that 👍

Some good players and some very astute signings on a free if we can get in early and get some deals completed!

Assuming Jonny Howson gets a new deal but McNair doesn’t, I’d be looking for : a striker, centre mid and a winger. That should leave us with atleast two player is every position.

We don’t need a huge summer upheaval, we need quality rather than quantity.

One thing we want to avoid is selling before we have confirmed and agreed replacements lined up. We hear too much that we ran out of time or couldn’t find what we wanted. We need to be better. Either we want to go up or we are happy being a Champ team.

Keep the majority of what we have. Clearly the likes of Jones / Mcgree / Forss and Clarke are entering final year's. I'd like to keep all 4. Yet doubtful.

Mcnair is definitely leaving. The likes of Hackney and Dieng have been linked with clubs. Again we really need to keep both. Unless the bids are simply to good to turn down.

Howson getting another year is a no brainier and I expect nailed on.

I would like us to really push to sign O'Brien if the numbers add up. A good age and getting better by the week. I'd have Ayling back. I think him and Smith can fill that RB position.

So priorities? This clearly depends on who we retain.

CM (maybe 2)
CF
RB

Clearly this changes if we have to sell Mcgree or Forss etc.

100% agree, but with our season starting 5 weeks before the transfer window shuts sort of rules that out in reality.

I would definitely (try to?) speak to Dieng, McGree, Hackney and Rav now and say if you are thinking of moving on, we want any deals completing by mid-July or you're staying for another season.

Gk - we’re stacked, 3 of the five contracted will stay, Dieng will be number 1 unless a prem side offers north of 8m

rb - Ayling will be signed on, he’s made a great impression. Dijksteel is leaving. That leaves the Smith conundrum, will he be fit? Do we need to get a young RB to backup for Ayling and learn from him? Probably

Lb - Engel and Bangura will be given pre-season. One might be off.

Cb - we’ve now got too many Rav and Clarke to start. McNair will leave. That gives us Lenihan and fry as backup. I would think one will be sold and a younger model brought in. If it was my choice I’d sell fry as Lenihan can cover CDM and is our best ball playing cb

Cm - Hackney will give us one more year. Howson will sign an extension. O’Brien for less than 2m. Then we need to sign a top quality CDM as first choice to sit behind Hackney

Lw - key position for me. McGree may leave with 1 year left. Silvera out on loan for game time, greenwood shipped out. So we need two players that can cover this role

Rw - jones and Forss is fine

10 - Azaz needs to to step up a bit more. He’s done ok, but we need a dedicated 10 to compete with him

Cf - lath and Coburn are good options, but we need a third one. Probably a technical one that can also play in any of the 3 attacking roles behind the strike

So that’s Ayling; a young rb; a youngish cb; O’Brien; a first choice CDM; 2x lw; a 10; a cf

2 resigned and 7 new players of which 3 are first choice players

Id like a big physical presence in midfield. Someone like that mpanzu at luton but not necessarily him.. Think we should invest in new centre back. Not convinced fry and lenihan can stay fit long enough.

It’s just not the Carrick way I don’t think.

He will always prefer a midfielder who can pass the ball over one who can be a “physical presence”

- Offer Ayling a one year deal

- Make a bid for O'Brien (no higher than £5m), or try and get him back on loan

- Send Greenwood and Thomas back to respective clubs

- Offer McNair, Howson and Jones' new deals

- Sell Glover, Smith, Djiksteel, Fry and Barlaser

- Send Silvera out on loan to a League One club

- Send Engel out on loan (with the option of recalling him if Bangura gets injured)

GK's - Dieng, Brynn

RB's - *New RB*, Ayling

CB's - VDB, Lenihan, Clarke, McNair

LB's - *New LB*, Bangura

CM's - *New DM*, Howson, Hackney, O'Brien

RW's - Forss, Jones

No 10's - *New no 10*, Azaz

LW's - *New LW*, McGree

STs - *New striker*, Lath, Coburn

That looks about right. I’d want Lath as our number 1 striker next season.

So maybe just a younger striker to compete with Coburn, maybe a more mobile forward who can play in the attacking midfield positions as well

I'd actually take a punt on Ike Ugbo. He impressed me when we played Sheff Wed and is out of contract this summer.

Scored 6 goals in 14 games playing in a poor side.
