Worst Ever Boro 11 - We have our team!

Southgate was dreadful. He took us from UEFA cup finalists to the championship. He was obsessed with playing rubbish fullbacks as midfielders and central midfielders as wingers. His transfer business was utterly atrocious. He sold several players on the cheap that went on to play PL football for the next decade while replacing them with utter dross. We played rubbish football and couldn't score goals.

I don't completely blame him. He never should have been given the job, that 100% lies with Gibson and his arrogant attitude, and he didn't have the funding McClaren had but he had more than other teams in the league and spent it very badly. He fell out with a load of players and/or they didn't trust him as manager so wanted out for better things. We were spineless the season we went down. He took over when we were at the peak of our 130 year history and he left us in a position we have been unable to recover from for 15 years.

I loved him as a player and he's a great bloke but he was a shocking manager for us.

There’s some solid dog todds in there for sure!
Not saying there aren't. But if we'd had had players like that (and some of them international players) between 82 and 86, we wouldn't have spent every year fighting off relegation to the third (which inevitably happened). Or been getting humped 5-1 at home by the likes of Grimsby, and dumped out of the FA cup at Darlington while watching Ray Hankin and Colin Ross bumbling around the pitch.

And all this happening in front of between 4000 and 5000 fans.

Why was he playing fullbacks as midfielders? Because we didn’t have enough midfielder.. we couldn’t buy any! We sold lots of players, let players go at the end of their contracts.. all with a view to bringing more money. Everything was done to bring more money in!

Selling Cattermole & Morrison and replacing with Digard & Aliadiere
Selling Young and replacing with Hoyte
Selling Yakubu replacing with Alves

Shwartzer gone replaced with Turnbull/Jones

We just didn’t have the money to sustain the UEFA cup challenging team.. not enough fans turned up either. All that stuff about the fans getting the team they deserve or whatever was said was about that.

The banks pulled the rug from under us on a numbers of occasions. We couldn’t sell Downing to Spurs because they wouldn’t let us spend money on players. We missed out on Matic and Watson.. because the money wasn’t there.

3 points separated us from relegation and survival. I honestly thing if we’d been able to get a midfielder in January.. that would have been the difference.

Southgate was ahead of his time with a lot of things.. but unfortunately our recruitment was not there with him and the financial climate certainly wasn’t there to support him.

Got to be Agnew. Despite his dodgy dealings Monk would have achieved the same as Pulis given the play offs. Agnew took a Karanka side that couldn't score, but could defend, took the shackles off, a some on here wanted Karanka today and created a side that couldn't do anything!

1. Ben Roberts
2. Antonio Barragan
3. Joe Bolton
4. Sean St Ledger
5. Phil Whelan
6. James Lee Siliki
7. Adam Hammill

8. Adlene Guedioura
9. Rudy Gestede
10. Dong Gook Lee
11. Victor Fischer

Hmm.. at best injury prone. not much heart.. I do t think that team makes it between 82 and 86. Ben Roberts probably does alright.. but can you honestly see that out field putting a shift in when they needed to? DGL might be the star of the show out of that lot tbh

Most of the Boeo managers we have had since Stan Anderson have showed an understanding of the area, the fans, the club ,,,, 2 come to mind that have not Strachen and Monk

Close call but Strachen was a d*ck ... hiding behind sarcasim

It’s why the criteria of 5 or more games was added.

Ultimately just a bit of fun - feel free to make a spin off!

I’ll tally up the strikers when I get 5 later day then onto the manager vote to lead our champions of men.
I think Guedioura only started one game for us - so wouldn't he need to be excluded?

Southgate was no great shakes while he was manager here. Brad Jones rightly gets criticised as a poor keeper, but all them home 0-0 draws at home to other relegation threatened teams were hardly his fault. I seem to remember one game Southgate played a midfield of mainly or possibly all defenders
Monk was poor, Murdoch (although having the team sold off before he even started) wasn't good. Pulis was poor too - as was Strachan , and Woodgate
But the appointment of Agnew when the wheels were coming off was probably the worst for me (although please tell @Capybara I said Raich Carter 😉)

Love him as a player but it worst manager was Southgate, the decline was rapid, we went from UEFA cup finalists to utter garbage in 2 seasons. We cut costs but giving away Cattermole and Morrison for peanuts and replacing with O'Neill and Digard was shocking. He got rid of the Boat a season too early and replaced Schwarzer with Jones/Turnbull. So many horror transfers I try and block out. That Cardiff FA cup game too 😭

rapid decline we finished higher in southgates first 2 seasons than mclarens last season.
im sure people think southgate came in and we instantly got relegated definately wasnt the case.

Southgate had the rug pulled out from beneath him with us selling or releasing ageing top professionals after years of over spending. Obviously i wouldnt change them years and southgate did have faults but come on no where near our worst manager.

Selling Cattermole £3.5m & Morrison £1.5m and replacing with Digard £4m & Aliadiere £2m
Selling Young £6m and replacing with Hoyte £3m
Selling Yakubu £11.5m replacing with Alves £12.5m
Replacing Mark Viduka (free) with Tuncay Sanli (free)
Replacing George Boateng £1m with Gary O’Neil £4m

They were all done to bring money in and to reduce costs!

Monk for me Southgate was just the wrong league & time, GS should not have been offered the job.
He was and he did well, probable the strongest candidate available not forgetting his fantastic performances as captain through the EUFA cup run while McClaren was playing footsie with Newcastle and the FA

Financial crash didn't help Gareth, as banks wouldn't continue to finance us as they had, but he should never have been appointed in the first place!

Who do we appoint instead? Felix Magath? Was it even him?

What are the German equivalents of Alves, Mido, O’Neil, Digard, Aliadiere etc that were available around that time?
