Zack Steffen on a permanent (Twitter rumour)

You might be surprised by his City wage, of course they pay absolute top dollar for their big transfers but a backup/development keeper might be much more reasonable.

Different profile coming from the youth team and that but remember reading that Foden was only on 50k until he signed his big new deal quite recently. Cancelo’s not on much.

This site has Steffen on about 40k. For a Randolph type, solid as with resale value and clearly one of the best keepers in the league (not sure Steffen is yet, but if that was the calculation) then I could see us going 20k. Isn’t that about what we were paying Randolph?

Man City wages

That was with parachute payments though. I know there were other reasons we sold Randolph but pretty sure his wage was a factor too.

i think we'll be very reluctant to give out contracts of that size again till we go up. Most likely, assuming Carrick rates him, is a loan for another year.

He will be on a fortune at city. I would say 40-50k minimum. 'Im pretty sure I read Delap is on 20k a week and he's done nothing.

These prem wages are ridiculous. Just remember Balogun was on 40k and he'd scored one senior goal.

I Simply can't see this being viable. I also woukd think he has higher aspersions than Boro (coming from a Boro fan😂).

Realistically he has to know he won't be getting 40k a week as 4th choice USA keeper after a rocky start to a season long loan in the 2nd tier of English football. I think he would be a great addition, but I don't think we will be paying that. But his contract is until 2025, so if he is on 2.5m a year probably not in a rush to give that up. Another season loan seems most likely.

The problem players like Steffen have is that he has spent the last 3 years as a back up. That is a significant amount of time to not be playing football, especially between the ages of 24 and 27. If he goes back to City at the end of this season, where he would be 3rd choice, he is probably never going to play regular football again as clubs will not want to sign a keeper to be first choice who has spent years not playing football. So he will have a choice to make; does he want to pick up a massive salary to be a back up, or take less money and play regularly and be part of a team. I know a lot of keepers choose the former, but it amazes me how many players are happy to not play.

I think our best chance of keeping him beyond the end of the season is more about how much we progress under Wor Micky this season than the finances on offer. I can’t see him hanging around here to play for a mid table side, but if we are pushing on towards the top of the table we might have a chance.

I’m really struggling with people saying steffen is worth £60k per week to us in the championship, how?

It wasn’t that long ago where Robert’s would have been preferred in the starting 11.

Akpom wouldn’t have been there either..

I’m not justifying paying him £60k a week, but if people genuinely think Roberts is a better keeper than Steffen then I don’t know what to say…

If I was an international goalkeeper at 27yo I’d rather be first choice getting game time with the opportunity to progress rather than sit in the reserves until I’m 30 and struggle to earn the big bucks at a decent level.

45k for 3 years = £6.75m to 30yo
maybe £1m a year after.. with little game time

or 30k for 6 years = £9m still only 33yo he could stretch another 6 years at that level imo

an eye on the prem with boro an promotion bonuses.. defo the best move to play long term imo

a goalkeepers career is much longer and would be affected by inaction and not competing at a decent level.

If you’re a good keeper you want game time, no reason why he shouldn’t be no 1
Tbh I'm making a joke about Norwich being ****. :D

I like Steffen, but whenever I've seen Roberts he's looked like he'll be a good championship keeper so could any money on fee and wages be spent better elsewhere?

I don't see us offering big wages to anyone any more so I think it would take something special for him to stay tbh.

Roberts has played 4 games for us ( i think) in two of those games, Barnsley in the cup and Cardiff he was very iffy and let goals in a "good championship keeper" has to save.

TBF, He is very good at coming for and claiming crosses, traits more common in the long ball type football played in league 1 and 2. If we dont sign Steffen we would need a new number 1

We lost the Barnsley match specifically because Roberts fumbled a simple save.

It was the sort of goal any goalkeeper should be preventing, not just a good one.

I think he should have saved all 3 goals against Cardiff too.

People just seem to give him more credit because he's our player and Steffen is on loan.
