Akpom move

People talking about this price out of context of a one year contract and the leaked news that he won't sign a new contract.

It likely won't be entirely clear what the fee is as always - this will be the best offer we've had and I would rather them take this now than wait another few weeks "just in case" we get a few million more at the deadline.

Disappointed but I would rather this than Chuba sign a pre-contract with another club in January - Brereton-Diaz did not look as good once he decided to move

He would sign a new contract, we're not willing to pay him what he's asked for.

You’re stating the obvious. It’s completely out of our hands, but until the transfer deadline is before the start of the season it will only get worse for clubs like ours.
You said it should’ve been sorted weeks ago but why should it? That’s evidenced by the number of deals still going on across the globe. It’ll be done when it’s done. Didn’t Boro do six in week a few weeks back?

If we go by what you’re saying, no business should be being done now because every club should have their houses in order at the start of August. It feels like you want to criticise Boro for being slow to do something that almost every other club does. Why are Man City only bidding for Paqueta now, for example? It should’ve been done in July. Manchester United have had all summer to get rid of Maguire and Fred.

That sum may well be absurd though, and my hunch is that is probably is. It’s the Viduka situation all over again, except with a player who is nowhere near as established as Viduka (and for whom we can still get a decent fee).

Can’t believe Bayern have left it this late to get Kane.

No that would be silly. The obvious solution to some would have been to bury him and save the planet some Co2 and pretend he was a tory so its ok 😉
The best bit of PR the club could do now is to release the news that Chuba voted Tory in the last election. Some folk would delete any memory of him!

It's an ok deal for the club.

I don't really understand fans being pleased at it though. Unless I missed us splashing out using the £22m Tav and Spence money last year?

If we get £12m for Chuba that doesn't mean we'll be spending £12m on new players. Anyone who thinks that is seriously deluded. Evidence suggests we'll spend a fraction of it.

A lot will probably go towards running costs and keep us a bit more sustainable. It'll give us more headroom under FFP too I imagine.

Which isn't a bad thing. But from a footballing perspective it's ****. We're losing our best player and I'm pretty sure he won't be replaced. So quite why some are pleased about this is a bit baffling.

Too much time on football manager I think. Where the money would go straight into the transfer budget and you'd use it to sign 3 Brazilian wonder kids. Unfortunately doesn't work like that in the real world.
Not happy about selling him but it's the way it goes unfortunately.

I know he's going to put things in a way that puts him in the best light, but Chuba has explicitly said thats definitely not the case.
I can't help feeling it's all a bit short sighted of the club, and it suits them to allow this narrative that he wanted an extortionate amount.

It’s been dragged out for weeks, even to the point he was on the bench last Saturday, despite there being zero intention to bring him on. Then there was the false hope of his tweet and the public hanging of Mark Drury. Like I said, it’s not easy, I’m not saying it is, but he has always been our key issue this summer, and pretty much any significant business we do will hinge on whether he stays or goes. Comparing it to Man City trying to sign what will be a squad player from West Ham is in no way comparable. We could’ve actually made it known that he is for sale if he wasn’t going to sign a new contract, as many other clubs have done with players in similar situations. Maybe we were trying to save face or had hoped that he would eventually sign a new contract, but we have no doubt missed out on players by allowing this to drag out.

The only two things we know are that he said it wasn't about money and then it was leaked today he wouldn't be signing a new contract.

That's likely all we will ever know - I won't be getting angry/disappointed at the club or Chuba.

Surely we have known that for the last few weeks, or even months though?

I'd have liked more, but I'd have said that regardless of what we got.

If Lens were to turn round now and offer to loan Chuba for one season in return for his transfer fee, would you accept?

I suppose the only practical difference between that situation and keeping him would be that we'd have first option on offering him a new contract if we just kept him.

However, I think he could sign a precontract agreement with Lens in January; he wouldn't need to wait and see if we were promoted or not. We'd have to be certain of promotion by then to offer him a competitive contract, so I don't think that is worth that much

But we also have fans complaining about the fee - if we had come out and said he was for sale we would have likely got even less.

We could hold out till the deadline and maybe get 2-3million more I reckon.

I think getting it done now is likely a good midpoint - try to get best value while still leaving weeks to sort the rest of our business out.

If he does as well as last season then he’d have his pick in January

Putting him up for sale 3/4 weeks ago, does not guarantee clubs would either make a bid, or offer something that is acceptable. Same result. Stop with this ridiculous need to create fictional scenarios to beat the club with.

I was kind of over the whole Akpom transfer saga the day it started, when it first known he was ‘injured’ in preseason and didn’t go on the trip abroad.

People can argue over the money as much as they like but a striker who has had one good season and is soon to turn 28, in his last year of his contract, no sign of signing an extension… £10m isn’t to be sniffed at. He was training with the reserves last season.

I wish him luck, not sure he will replicate last seasons heroics but I hope he does.

Spot on. For the actual players, as opposed to loanees, the last three windows have bee one step forward and two back.

Well I honestly think the club would have paid him “a bit more”. As you say, Chuba doesn’t want to be seen as a money grabber but the fact is we can’t/won’t pay him enough to stay when he has better and higher paid offers on the table. It’s just the way it is, I don’t begrudge either party tbh.
