Anyone else sick of living in England?

There are loads of parts of England and Britain I love and would miss if I moved abroad, but there are plenty of things about the little Englanders I wouldn't. Us Boro folk are more Celtic and Viking than Anglo-Saxon or Norman anyway, so I would happily emigrate to an independent Scotland.

I honestly don't get the endless negativity.
We live in a truly beautiful country.
We have real culture, tradition, history, excellence, tolerance, opportunity, community, quality, respect, humanity and diversity.

It is not perfect, I've been to a lot of countries and nowhere is in my experience.

This country is not an embarrassment, is not going backwards (does nobody remember where we were in the late 70's/early 80's as a country), is not a disgrace and is not a laughing stock.
It should be and could be better, but will only be so if our population stops moaning and pulls together more consistently.

If everywhere else is so damned good, get yourself there.
Go on, what's stopping you?

During lockdown Mrs Foggy and I have been watching some of these daytime programmes about moving abroad. Spain, Greece, Portugal, Australia I wouldn’t be interested in. Too hot and not at all cheap.

But then, they go to parts of the USA like Florida where you can buy a sprawling detached bungalow in a couple of acres of land with a large swimming pool and, at the end of your huge garden, a mooring where you can tie up your boat on the river....

All for about £75,000!

I had real hopes of a permanent move to Spain in 18 months time. Retire a little early and find a warm climate for my aching bones. Health reasons were the key but to be honest I find Britain broken at the moment with little hope for improvement. The debate on Brexit showed the deep rooted unkind nature of too many people and a horrible I’m alright stuff anyone else culture. Demonisation of foreigners, despite the clear evidence they added significantly to the economy, rounding on so called scrounges (there by the grace of God), slagging off single mums and the sick - I think the country and this and the previous message board showed a horrible underbelly during and post Brexit. I thought a Corbyn government could make us care a bit more again (wouldn’t free Broadband of helped the poorest kids in lockdown this year) but the ugly nasty destruction of him not what he offered ushered in the nastiest government since Thatcher. The Tories will only get worse as nastiness coupled with intolerance and ineptness is a scary mix. Need to see what the EU offer for those still wanting to live and spend our hard earned money in their countries but I see a decade of hard right politics creating an even greater society of haves and have nots. Convinced my kids to get to New Zealand as soon as they can. Farage won

I wonder what someone living in a European country would feel about living in England right now , particularly after becoming independent.

I remember where we were in the 70s, the council estates are the same but the people living in them have less work and their life chances are more diminished today.

When you travel for long s ells and see other countries more developed than we should be it leads to disappointment and the realisation that something incredibly wrong had been going on.

Nothing to do with right or left wing, more to do with observation and a refusal to brush under the carpet to save face.

The other country I've spent a lot of time in and see the same is USA.

Stand your ground. Think about it......

Always a small problem moving abroad, health care. It's fine and dandy when your young and fit but you will have to pay for it in later life.
I'm about to retire and am already eligible for Medicare. The base cost is $146 a month each. There are additional costs on top of that.

I nearly put that in my post (is the grass greener) but took it out. You never know if you don't try and it could be something you later wished you did. I would rather be proved wrong than sit wondering what if.
Norman,
My father in law many years ago, urged me and my wife to save money for a deposit on a house and to stop pouring money down the drain by way of renting.
He started to take us to outer suburbs of Sydney where new land was cheaper and at the time, we knew that he was right but we knew within ourselves that we
wanted to travel the world.
After we had amounted a decent deposit for a purchase and thought it through and agonised over it for months we decided to travel.

It was left up to me to break it to the in-laws.
I was nervous about it, so much so, as they had wasted so much time and effort.
When I did break the news to them and expecting a roasting, my father in law simply looked at me and said " Well son, when you get old like me, you look
back through your life and you find that you never regret the things that you did, but, you always regret the things that you didn't do. Follow your dreams son
and give my daughter a wonderful life.

I had no idea at the time how profound those words would be for the remainder of my life.
Those words of wisdom has been passed on to many young fellas over the years that I worked with that came to me seeking advice from an older and wiser head.

Thanks Dad, those words changed my life and several others. RIP

Love and best wishes from Oz
Stay safe.

My Brother and Sis in Law retired to Cyprus about 15 years ago, after a week she this saying this bleeding heat and I'm sick of the beach, your there for life not a holiday was my reply. Brother had a heart attack about 5 years ago, he flashed his E111 and was treated, now he would have to flash his cheque book.

Good post, wish I could have put it across as so 👍
