At least freeports are a benefit, right?

Did we really score lower than Tyneside in the selection process? Tees and Hartlepool is far bigger than Port of Tyne (3rd busiest in the UK) I read recently that it is the deepest port on the east coast and the only UK port to handle more exports than imports. It also has vast amounts of land which is ripe for redevelopment. I would love to know on what points the Tyne scored higher.

Thatcher created some in the UK in the early 80s
Yes she created 6 - which were decommissioned by David Cameron in 2012 as they werent working. I’m sure when PD say it’s the first UK Freeport they mean it’s to be the first one of the 8 announced by Sumak last year.

I suspect you would have to delve into treasury papers to understand that but as you will see from the Newcastle Chronicle report they were a little sore that Teesside was preferred despite scoring higher in total. But it was narrow.

Maybe, or maybe they're quite happy to keep the pretence that we couldn't have these before brexit and that they're going to prove superb value for our economy 🤦‍♂️

More welcoming to butchers?

Tyneside was ranked third of eighteen bids, but the government only allowed one per region.

Teesside was chosen because of its “stronger alignment with Government policy (in particular the Net Zero agenda and the Prime Minister’s recently published 10 Point Plan).”

I don’t care where the jobs come from if I am honest with you. All I want are jobs for Teeside people. This town is run down at least we seem to be getting lots of announcements of plants opening up surely that is a good thing. I work in heavy industries so it looks like a lot of work for people like me

Surely it is a form of 'levelling up'. Free Ports is just a label, it will result in jobs in an area that needs them it that simple. I don't care either if you want to claim it is conning us it to believing it was to be this or that. From little acorns and all that.

Access to Greggs and fat lasses who swallow?

Freeport=Tax Avoidance Scheme - who does that really help.

Geordies shouldn't be worried about losing out. Boris will be back in his dressing up box in a couple of weeks then taking a cheap flight into Tyneside (trains are too green and expensive), to spread some more crumbs of levelling out for them. Put money on it.

I would vote anyone in if it meant more jobs for Teeside and more opportunities for my children and the children they know
Ah the river Tee.

I guess it's an admirable thing to try and bring jobs to the region. Even if it is a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul

Have GE closed a plant in the U.K to open a facility here in Teesside? I don't know. If there are financial incentives/tax benefits or some other reason that encouraged companies to build here then that is great news. With globalisation, anything goes, there will be winners and losers.

I was referring to the report I posted
