Boro Fan - 3 Year Ban

Oh without a doubt it wasn't, and as I said in my first post how on earth did the CPS see it through.

But it's not the first time that an over zealous police force, woefully not fit for purpose, have gone for a bit of "easy nicking" which this case seems to be.
Different lawyers have different views unfortunately.

I've had cases not too different from this land on my desk and thought why are we wasting everyones' time and kicked them after another lawyer thought it appropriate to continue.

It might seem harsh but what do people really expect. The Derby games last season were expected to be feisty, so fans acting in a way that could result in things kicking off was that last thing the authorities wanted.

Besides, can people really not watch a game of football without getting angry? What's the point in all the posturing to opposition fans, shouting abuse at players and getting worked up about referee decisions?

It's a funny thing tribalism.

The behaviour anywhere else in life is quite disgusting and when read aloud in court the guys convicted would be quite embarrassed I expect. But in the heat of battle surrounded by like minded fans it is easy to get lost in it. Other sports don't seem to be quite so partisan as football, and there seems to be a lot of history and anger maintained in football from throughout the years.

I think this with chanting as well- I wouldn't likely let someone know he's a fat b****d to his face, but in a group in the stand it is more acceptable.

It would be interesting to see if they set this as a precedent or if it is a complete one off game/ response.

Behave like an adult while in public and this wouldn’t happen, hard to have much sympathy

Bang on. A lot of these seem to be taking place outside the ground too. I don't think it's unreasonable for fans to expect to be able to walk to a game without being subjected to verbal abuse or intimidating behaviour. Even Derby fans 😉

Needs stamping on for me, it's ridiculous. Like most people I've been to away games where the atmosphere outside the ground has been hostile and you were better off hiding club colours to avoid any chew.

I've also been to plenty (the majority thankfully) where not only was it not a problem being identifiable as a Boro fan, you could actually have a chat and friendly banter with the opposition.

I know which I prefer. Something wrong with people who prefer the former.

The defence for these fans seems
To whataboutery

Looks at what the derby fans did
Looks at what the Sunderland fans will do

If you make a mistake, it doesn’t absolve you from consequences and your responsibilities because other haven’t been prosecuted
When liverpool and man utd or celtic rangers fans sing abusive songs at each other are the police going to go in and arrest thousands.

unless the remarks are directly threatening then I don't see how its an offence. its not a hate crime ,so such name calling in any other walk of life wouldn't have got to court.

I wouldnt trust cleveland police if they said the grass was green on the riverside pitch. A force renowned through the land as the worst for corruption from the bobby on the beat to chief constable, with more misconduct charges than tory backbenchers. Why does anyone think there football unit would be any different.
