I've never been a fan of fry totally operated just my opinion but watching that defending yesterday from him keep turning his back to the ball when opposing player is about to shoot totally unacceptable for a defender sould be prepared to put his whole body on the line for the cause

Posted this about him on the tackling & leadership thread when someone mentioned Fry....

He's never had that aggression and desire IMO. For a 6' 3" centre back who goes up for every set piece pretty much to have 2 goals in 210 appearances is pretty dire. The fact he has 13 bookings and one red (which was a bit harsh) also suggests he's either immaculate in all he does, or he's not rattling people and taking one for the team when needed often enough as well.

As a comparison Ayala has almost the same appearances for us at 216, but he had 23 goals, 48 booking (three doubles bookings, leading to reds) and two straight reds.

Our win % with Fry in the team was much higher last season IIRC, but his biggest weakness is players running at him and yesterday him and Lenihen were far too exposed to this.

I don't think its always helpful to judge individual players in isolation when the team is generally underperforming.

Ultimately how many CBs are comfortable if players are just allowed to run at them freely? That's a problem stemming from the midfield not doing its job properly IMO. I do think the midfield not protecting the defence enough is a general underlying cause of our defensive frailty and Carrick doesn't seem to have got a grasp on that yet.

Agree with most of the replays but if you watch him he never picks any one up in the box stands static and when he turns to sheld himself from a shot just unacceptable and he does it constantly surely the trainers sound pick up in this when they play video back of game

Maybe Woodgate is not picking this up!

I think think he definitely will recognise it as an issue, but hasn't got the personnel to address it

At the match yesterday I was thinking that his distribution has shown a marked improvement this season. To me it has always seemed a bit of an achiles heel to his game and especially so with how Carrick wants to play out from the back. Sadly so far this season the perceived improvement in that side of his game seems to have come at the detriment of his basic defending skills. He's only just turned 25, I still think he's developing into a solid Championship defender and can't be easy having had so many different managers: Pulis, Woodgate, Warnock, Wilder and now Carrick

We need big ugly bulky defenders that aren't afraid to get booted. Ones that strikers are terrified to play against and know that tgey have to put in a double shift to stand a chance of scoring. For me fry isn't this he for me is the weakest link. He needs to bulk up to me a powerful unit.

Lenihan is a natural leader who orchestrates the defence and can defend but needs a solid partner
