If there was no speed limits on motorways......

Anyone doing a ton on the open road is a nutter. If you want to do that, book a track day and leave the roads safe for me and my family please.

Anyone who thinks they can control a car at 100 mph when things go wrong are kidding themselves. The worst kinds of drivers are those who think they are good, and everyone else is rubbish.

Hgvs are at their limit at 56mph. When pulling a fully laden trailer you can forget stopping if the car in front slams on.
They do 70mph (and often more) in the US all the time. It can be a bit frightening as the don't have the same side protection on the trailers we do To have one undertaking you in the next lane at 70mph-75mph when you can look straight under it at the traffic in the next lane is mental.

But the death toll on their roads (especially where I drive mainly between Port Fourchon and Houston) is poor compared to to European standards.

Wow, didn't realise Texas was that bad! They are awful drivers though, most of the time I've driven there you were allowed to text whilst driving. On the speed debate, a great deal of US roads still have 55mph or 65mph limits and a horrendous death toll, which kinda proves it is driving standards not the speed which leads to deaths.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The fatal car crash death rate was 11.2 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.13 deaths per 100 million miles traveled.
...
Here are the 10 states with the most fatal car accidents:
  • Texas (3,305)
  • California (3,259)
  • Florida (2,915)
  • Georgia (1,407)
  • North Carolina (1,321)
  • Pennsylvania (1,103)
  • Ohio (996)
  • Tennessee (974)

I don't think it is that bad is it? Lot of people in Texas. Look at the stats per head of population

70 is miles

yeah they’ll do more, no problem. Going is easy. Stopping is the problem.

Pretty stupid irresponsible thread.
What speed would you cruise out in a town centre or through a crowded housing estate?
Surely no one in their right mind would have cruise control set through a town centre etc? Pointless as it's stop start all the way usually.

Lots of issues with these Tesla vehicles - very serious issues. There are great safety concerns over just about everything involved with Tesla. Like any corporation, lots of information is hidden and manipulated and attempted to be hidden from the public. But there's an unbelievable amount of recalls at play, all linked with technology, computers and software. This is when the vehicles are new, just imagine what goes wrong as they age. It will all break down, absolutely guaranteeed - no argument. Absolute fact.

Good luck getting into a Tesla and letting those computers drive you around. They can't even master the basics like unlocking doors and perfecting the windscreen wipers yet, nevermind anything else. The largest taxi firm in Paris have recently suspended the Tesla model 3 from their fleet. There's also many other serious issues at play.

You do talk some utter bull

I once had a day on an 18 wheeler around Connecticut, the driver told me that you should never overtake a truck in the rain, because they can't see more than about half the length off the trailer because of spray and drivers are always ;crunching' little cars as they pull out in the rain

The problem with this topic is would you also be happy to change your tyres once maybe twice a year? Germanys legal limit is really high for tyre tread, thats where this country get a lot of its part worns from. Personally i'd be happy at 85/90 but wouldnt be happy about others driving at that, especially older people trying to overtake somebody doing 60 and im flying past them
You can have all the ability and confidence driving, but overtaking someone who suddenly decides to change lanes without looking at anything over 80ish is likely to be a bad one

Make tests significantly harder and include motorway driving as a part of it then it’s much safer to increase the speed limit

I thought motorway driving is part of the test now?

The problem is with making tests harder now is you still have everyone from 18 and up on the roads who have taken the older tests thinking they are safe to drive at 80 or 90 as well.

Maybe if the police started cracking down on poor driving the standards would improve? Apart from the odd speed camera can you can do what you want on the roads in North Yorkshire and get away with it.

I agree totally with this though. Driving standards are so poor in this country. We need a clamp down on dangerous driving, bad lane discipline on motorways. Bad impatient and inconsiderate drivers in towns and cities .

Surely a lot of deaths in the USA are down to automatic cars, heavy on the brake in winter weather must be a deciding factor. I followed a swaying driver in the States and hoped he would not brake, but he did and lost his canoes and bent the axle on the trailer, no injuries but a dented ego. Your mind says brake but it's not the best thing to do. Lost a mate in a Military convoy for the same reason.
